“What a find!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013

If you're going to JHB on a budget - head straight the the Saffron. I loved the facility and I REALLY liked the location. I have now stayed at a few different localities in JHB and I have to say I hate the place. But Melville is like an island of civility and culture in that ocean of strife and I cannot recommend the Saffron enough. If you can't get in there - find somewhere else in Melville!

Thank you very much for your kind review. Melville has always been that little island to us and we pride ourselves with the hospitality that Melville has to offer, from the guesthouses to the restaurants and coffee chops and bars, we are your home away from home. We look forward to your next stay!

This was a beautiful place, with great design and nice amenities. The neighborhood is great too--we had heard horrible things about the crime in JoBurg, but one feels relatively safe in this neighborhood.

We'd heard it's one of the only neighborhoods where you can walk around freely and feel like you're in a normal metropolitan area like NYC or Paris where people just walk around all the time. From our limited Joburg experience, we were right! Cute little bookshops, boutiques and restaurants are really close by.

There were two small things that went wrong: the guy who was supposed to pick us up at the airport was late, so we had to take another cab, and they forgot to call us for our wake-up call. Luckily, we had set another alarm. But small stuff. There's a great breakfast at a cafe that's included in the stay.

Melville was a great neighborhood, and the accommodation was very comfortable. Several good restaurants within a couple blocks, which was good. They provided secure off street parking. The fact that it included a full breakfast at a neighboring bakery/cafe was icing on the cake. Recommend it highly.

A lovely place to stay. This isn't the normal guest house or hotel, these are individual rooms and studios within an enclosure, all at ground level. Suitable if your mobility isn't brilliant but you can cope with slopes, small steps and thresholds but probably not suitable for a wheel chair. Very secure, there are tall walls and fences around and overnight security too. Cars are parked inside without charge. Melville is magic, 7th Street and Melville Restaurants, Cafes and shops are literally on your door step. We had room three which was large, beautifully decorated, air conditioned and the bed was very comfortable, also had microwave kettle and sink. From observation sizes and facilities do vary. WiFi access was free and good. Breakfast from a cafe a short walk away was delicious and offered a good selection. Staff friendly and very helpful and the laundry service excellent. We would certainly stay again if we return to South Africa and were not surprised to find they were full when we tried to book in for an overnight stay on our return from Durban.

Room Tip: They all looked lovely but sizes do vary.

I used to live in Joburg and love Melville, so I was pumped to be put up on 7th street where i was there for meetings. And I was not disappointed. This place was really superbly situated, and the rooms are really spacious and comfortable. I loved it! Good breakfast as well. In general staff was great as well. However, as a heads up, it is a bit of a challenge if you don't have cell phone access (as many international travellers do not)--- there are no phones in the room, and no phone at reception if you want to contact people (or people want to contact you) or even order delivery after a long flight. A bit frustrating! But aside from this, the place is great and i would definitely recommend it!

Steps away from the wonderful restaurants and shops in the Melville neighborhood. Accomodations were very comfortable and the staff always helpful. WiFi works well and the breakfast is excellent. I've been to Joburg many times and this is one of my favorite neighborhoods. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Room 3 was superb!

This is a modern and well decorated place. Rooms are large and very confortable. To complete the location is perfect. Close to nice restaurants and coffee shops. Cozy street and very lively area. You can't go wrong! The manager, Emily, is a very sweet person. The whole staff will make you feel home. I'll definetively will be there the next time.
