“Beautiful setting and great service, slightly remote location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2011

This was the perfect start to our one month honeymoon travelling in Africa. The ladies from Kilulu were helpful and quick at responding to emails. After some initial confusion about how we could pay for the room (they don't take credit card bookings) it was agreed we could pay cash on arrival. They arranged for a driver to pick us up at Joburg airport and this all went smoothly, he was friendly and helpful. A word of warning - it is a pretty long way out to Kilulu from central Joburg so it's not ideally situated, it helps if you have your own transport otherwise you will end up spending a fortune on taxis. This said it is on the north side so is closer to places like Melrose if you are planning on going out around there.

The lodge is set in stunning grounds. We arrived in winter and so it was quite chilly but there was beautiful sunshine and light on the garden and water features - it was lovely sitting outside having tea on the verandah despite having to wear some jumpers. They had put out a welcome sign for us as it was our honeymoon and had also made sure the heater was on in the room so that we would be warm. The accommodation is chalet-style,had beautiful rustic style furnishings and was spotlessly clean. The chalets are situated some distance from each other around the grounds so there is lots of privacy. Security also seems good, we were given the code to access the gate but our taxi driver was not. The lodge arranged for a taxi to take us into town and then also pick us up from Melrose after we had been out for dinner that night.

We had an excellent cooked breakfast in the morning and met the owner who is lovely and arranged for us also to have some champagne. They were helpful in letting us use the internet in the office, arranging transport, and letting us leave our bags there for the day after we had checked out.

All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and thought it was excellent value, the slightly remote location is really the only thing that is a problem at Kilulu and even that adds to the general peacefulness of a stay there.

“Perfect country lodge with great access to Johannesburg”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2009

I wanted a place that combined the peace and quiet of the African countryside with accessibility to Johannesburg's West Rand, and I found more than I could have hoped for in Kilulu Lodge.

From my very first phone call from the UK they were professional, welcoming and knowledgeable. On arrival the welcome was warm and accommodating. But I reserve my best comments for the cottage we stayed in, and the stunning garden surrounds. What a beautiful, beautiful place! After the cramped confines of London, we could spread out in a place where we felt instantly at home, and spoiled - our own living room, patio and garden, plus a bathroom of pure indulgence and luxury.

Kilulu Lodge had something special - a real sense of serenity and zen-like peace. |It felt as if everyone on the team had a stake in the success of our stay, and it shone through in all the little touches of service.

We always felt safe, secure and looked after when accessing or leaving the property. And the champagne breakfast on our first morning was a fabulous treat. As a beekeeper, I loved the added joy of the honey from their own bees.

Highly recommended!
