“Timeless classic ! The right mix of service, style and value for money.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2009

As a returning guest of this gem in the heart of northern suburbs, Melrose Place Guest Lodge is the only place to think of when visiting Johannesburg, South Africa. The ambience remains consistently welcoming and comfortable. From the check-in , the privacy and comfort of each room, the delicious suppers punctuated with lively discussions with fellow guests to the pleasant surprise when settling the bill !!
I always look forward to returning - what better recommendation?

The hospitality is very good , rooms are clean and just enough. All the rates are idealistic and affordable.

The company I was visiting out me up in the Melrose Place on this trip, since I was travelling with my wife. When I was alone last year, they put me up in the Protea Wanderers hotel. The two lodgings are only a couple of blocks apart, but that's about the only similarity between the two lodgings. You really can not compare staying in a chain hotel with being in this bed & breakfast.

We loved our stay at Melrose Place. Sue and her staff are all exceptionally friendly, and went to great lengths to make our two-night stay enjoyable. I had to work during the one day we were in the area, but Sue pulled out pamphlets for some of the local sites and arranged a day trip for my wife with one of the two taxi drivers that the lodge uses on a regular basis. We also used the driver to take us to the airport on our last day, and we were able to charge both trips to our room bill.

The two breakfasts were very nice. You have to let the staff know ahead of time if you would like to have dinner at the lodge. We did this our last night, since we didn't feel like taking a taxi to one
of the restaurants in the area. We were glad we did, since the food was tasty and we enjoyed the company of the other guests in the lodge. Several of the people we met at these meals had stayed at the Melrose several times in the past, since the staff does try to make you feel like you are home. I know that I will ask if I can be booked there on my next business trip!

My husband, daughter and I stayed here for 4 nights while in Joburg in Dec. 2006. The owner, Sue Truter, was very welcoming and friendly, and seems to run the place with great control. She treated my daughter and I to afternoon tea and muffins, just baked by one of the household staff, the day we arrived. We asked to have dinner in our room that evening as we were too tired to eat in the main house, and this was facilitated, no problem. The food was delicious. We were in Joburg for a wedding so we didn't spend that much time on the property, but we did try the pool, which was lovely and a big hit with our daughter. There is a lovely serene atmosphere about Melrose Place, despite the usual Joburg-style security (razorwire on big high perimeter wall, big forbidding-looking locked gates). Don't expect to be able to walk anywhere from here, but that is a feature of Joburg in general, not just this place. It has to be taxis or car all the time. Sue provided us with the number of a reliable taxi-man who ferried us everywhere and was always where we wanted him within minutes. The household and garden staff of Melrose Place were all lovely, friendly and did their jobs excellently. The only small problem we had during our stay was that the room we requested (family room) was not available on our first night, and so we had to move rooms on the second day. The rooms were nicely-furnished and very clean, and the family room was more than big enough for 3. Overall, a great experience.

  • Liked — Warm, friendly, attentive staff, beautiful setting,
  • Disliked — Nothing really. All good.
