“I don't normally do Zoos”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2014

Having said this I found the Johannesburg Zoo really good. My Grandson loved it. There are well laid out paths and enclosures. The restaurant facilities are excellent. In November 2013 I started the Zoo race 10 km and did reasonably well in the Grandmasters group.

“One of the best Zoos that look after their animals.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2014

The enclosures are well constructed, clean and cared for as are the animals. Zoos are not ideal but help retain a genetic pool which this is being decimated by the illegal wildlife trade.
The animals are well fed and as happy as can be.Great place to spend a day. Take a blanket and a picnic or buy at the Zoo.

“A lovely zoo, close encounters and great location..”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2014

I really enjoyed the Jo'burg Zoo. It seems a bit silly at first, since you can driver an hour to the Lion Park or 2 hours to Pilanesburg Nature Reserve. BUT nonetheless if you feel like staying within the city for a day and seeing some of nature's gifts- this is a good spot. One of the stand out features would be how close you can get to the giraffes! We actually fed the giraffes some of the leaves that were pulling out of the trees. The animals all have a relatively good amount of space which is always good to see. The only bummer was the polar bear exhibit. They just don't seem to fair well in Jo'burg, understandably so. It has been almost 4 years since our visit so they may not even be there these days. Nearby is Zoo Lake, which is also a lovely visit, along with dinner at Moyo's restaurant.

“A lovely zoo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2013

A clean, well set out zoo. not small, but not too large to walk around and enjoy the sights. There are a number of different, unconventional animals to see such as lemurs, a variety of wildcats and gorillas and the enclosures are well kept and spacious. there are lovely picnic areas, a kiddies farm and play area, and peace away from the city. Historical sights are also open for viewing in the zoo area such as the military museum and a history on the zoo and zookeeping. a variety of birds, apes, african, asian, american sections. The weather is usually mild and there is a restaurant. however, the toilets often lack toilet paper and need to be less dingy and cleaner. A baby change room is not easy to find either. Parking is not easy to find on busy days, so avoid weekends and public holidays. well stocked, serene and overall a nice place to spend the day.
