My objective was to sample some local (South African) beer, and I don't mean the mass marketed Castle or its like. To that end the selection in the Griffin was very good, especially the beer from the Mitchells brewery.
My only disappointment was that the barman knew little about the beer he was selling. He recommended a particular one, which was fine to drink, but on inspecting the bottle I found it had been brewed in Bavaria! So much for local beer. My advice is to stick to the handpumps (which are on the upstairs bar).
Generally a young and lively crowd, and if you want to eat you'd best book ahead.
Definitely worth searching out tho.
