This groovy new boutique hotel is the result of a purchase and rebranding by Tsogo Sun from the former Grace Hotel and reopened in July 2012 after an extensive makeover.
The ‘greet’ is a fun experience with Willard the concierge greeting you in a very funky frock coat and bowler hat. Swift, convivial and a bit of fun, reinforcing the changing face of luxury hotels from stodgy and stiff.
My check-in was a bit bumpy when I arrived in my first room on the 9th floor to an unmade bed, but this was quickly rectified by David who discovered I’d been changed to 709. This room had a great outlook over the pool, but was in a WiFi shadow, so I was changed to 708, overlooking the car park. View sacrificed for connectivity, so if you need fast reliable internet, you’ll need to get a room on this unsexy side of the hotel.
Having inspected three deluxe standard rooms, I can say they are all spotlessly turned out with quality Molson Brown amenities, big fat TV, good sized working desk space and neat selection of complimentary snacks and glass bottled water. Needed to iron a shirt for dinner but no ironing board, so housekeeping kindly offered a free pressing and turned that around inside an hour, so no complaints there.
Didn’t get a chance to sample dinner at the acclaimed Level Four restaurant or gym, nor inspect the other room categories, so cannot comment there, but there are images on the website. There is handy covered access to Rosebank Shopping Mall which, at time of writing, was undergoing extensive renovations and not a perfect experience.
Breakfast is a classy affair with a small but fancy continental selection laid out and hot selections a la carte. Pot coffee was weak and not to my taste, but rectified with a stiff latte from the barista.
In a comical departure scene, I was helping stack the luggage trolley and tore a mighty embarrassing rift in my trousers. Vincent came to my rescue by pressing a spare pair hurriedly extracted from my duffle and preserved what was left of my dignity. Fortunately I was wearing matching briefs (!) Thank you.
All in all, a fun stay despite a couple of hiccups. Most importantly, the staff handled these little challenges superbly and demonstrated sound training and predictive service.
