We spent one night at the Grand while in transit from Cape Town. The shuttle picking us up at the airport was relatively prompt and efficient, but the shuttle taking us to the airport the following morning was late and based on the looks and behavior of the driver, he had just rolled out of bed. When we arrived at check-in, the staff said they had no record of our reservation, despite the fact that we had booked and pre-paid for it through our travel agent weeks before. Even at checkout, they asked for payment again and we reminded them it was already covered. Customer service did not appear to be the hotel staff's forte. The hotel is located across the street from a shopping mall and the hotel will arrange transport for 40 Rand, which we chose at night with purchases in hand. The rooms are small and unremarkable. I wouldn’t recommend the place, although it doesn’t seem like there are a lot of other options in that price range so close to the airport.

“Caution - Credit Card Fraud”

We recently stayed at this hotel on 3 separate nights as part of a vacation that took us to Botswana and Mauritius. We wanted a hotel that was close to the airport.

We paid for our first night with a credit card, and then spent 2 weeks on safari in Botswana. During that 2 week interval, the credit card was not again used. Upon our return to Johannesburg, we learned that the credit card had been cancelled after the credit card number had been used for a number of fraudulent transactions. Because the credit card had only been used at this hotel, the misappropriation of the credit information could only have originated from the payment of our hotel account.

The hotel's response to this incident was abysmal, and should be an embarrassment to senior company management.

As to the quality of the hotel, it is convenient to the airport, and the shuttle service is efficient. The hotel is very noisy during the day as a result of flight traffic, but this noise ceases at night.

The hotel staff were generally inefficient. We called for room service one night. An hour later, when our food had not been delivered, we called again, only to learn that our order had been lost. We again placed the order, and waited a further 45 minutes for it to be delivered.

“The Plane, The Plane, The Noise, The Plane”

The Airport Grand

I stayed here at this hotel wanting to be close to the airport. I did not realise that the hotel was almost at the begining of the landing strip. The hotel does not have double glazing or any sound proofing at all. The planes fly directly over the hotel if your by the pool the noise is deafening.
While there I burnt my legs badly having lived in SA for over 11 years I thought this odd as I had only been in the sun at 10am for 30 minutes. When I went to the doctor both in South Africa and when I arrived home in the UK I was informed by both that I had 1st if not 2nd degree burns on my legs from a chemical.
The doctor in south africa speculated that he thought it had come from one of the planes when they release excess fuel before they land. I spent the last two days of my holiday in bed with bandages on my legs and a further week off work back in the UK.
Breakfast was included in our stay the food was not bad but the staff's attitued was terrible. One morning two of them were arguing over which table we should sit at we were the only two people at breakfast. Our room key had to be rest every day for the first 3 days every time we came back we could not get into the room. I would not recommend this hotel to any one.

I arrived late in the evening in Jo'burg one day before beginning a tour of South Africa. The reviews of this hotel seemed reasonable (I realize that some find fault with every hotel) so I booked it. There was a free shuttle to and from the hotel (great), complimentary breakfast (quite good with several cooked options), and the room was fine with a separate bath and shower in the WC. As it was a single room it wasn't overlarge, but overlooked the inner courtyard and pool area. It was clean, the hotel quiet, and I encountered only one significant problem. Beginning at 5:00 a.m. and about every 10 minutes thereafter, the room shakes as a giant aircraft passes directly over the hotel. Sleep time is over! I didn't realize that the hotel was in the direct flightpath and that noise insulation was totally lacking! This would be sufficient reason to seek out another property in future if you would like to sleep a little later!

This place is nice with quick access by hotel shuttle to the airport. It is not very close to anything else in JoBerg so I would only stay here if you want to be close to the airport. If you are trying to save money by staying here, the expensive taxis will ruin your plan. Anyway, this place is a typical business hotel with mostly business travlers. The rooms are clean and nice but nothing that would make you write home. I found the showers too small but it does the job. The lobby is nice and the pool is fine. Airplanes go right over the hotel so if you are planning to sleep in this isnt the right place for you. The airplanes do stop flying during the night but I am not sure of the hours. If you have some time to spend I recommend getting a guide which you can find at the aiport information desk and I was told (by my guide) the importance of the "real" guide badge which is thicker than the "fake" ones. I don't know the validity of this but why take chances. I took a $100 taxi ride (taxi fares are negotiable)to the Carnivore restaurant which is quite an experience and I had to go after my great time at the other location in Kenya. Only go here if you like meat and want to try different types of game meat. Again, I would recommend this hotel as a nice, clean place to stay if you need an airport close accomodations.
