In May 2013, I booked 4 rooms online for a break for family (extended and my own) for a 1 night stay on Saturday, 8th June 2013. We all had great expectations for this break since the kids were looking forward to the rides, etc, having heard about Gold Reef City!
On arrival at the main vehicle entrance to Gold Reef City, I was directed to the hotel car park, which is seperate from the main theme park carpark. Parking was aplenty! Since my name was on the list of guests, Security allowed me into the premises for check-in.
The check-in process was efficient, quick and problem-free! Peggy was friendly and efficient too! I checked in for all rooms, which were placed on the same floor, as requested. As this was an early check-in (which I did not request when I made the book-in), only 1 of the 4 rooms was ready. This was already more than I expected! Our rooms were in the building that houses the conference centre.
I did not make use of any porter services, but carried my luggage to my room. The room was spotless, neat and luxurious! We unpacked, and left the room to enjoy the theme park with the kids!
I called the reception upon our return to request a babycot (here again, I forgot to ask for this when making the booking, or when checking in). Housekeeping brought this to my room in less than 5 minutes! Family members requested extra towels on Sunday morning, and this was also brought to them shortly thereafter without any questions asked!
Breakfast the following morning at Barney's was also excellent! The variety of food available, and the service, was outstanding!
Having visited Disney World a few years ago, I can definitely make the comparison, and safely say that the service at this hotel is world class!
However, there were a few issues (not related to the service from staff):
a) Hot water in the shower was not available at 22h00 on Sat night, nor at 09h30 on Sunday! The water was luke warm to cold, hence a tad annoying. Not sure whether the demand for hot water is simply higher at these times!
b) We had 2 baby strollers with us. These strollers had to be carried up a flight of stairs everytime we left/returned to our room, which was on the 1st floor. Had I known this at check in, I would have requested ground floor rooms.
c) Since this specific building has tables and chairs within the courtyard, the noise made by guests who use this courtyard reverberates greatly! There were guests who returned to the hotel at approx 23h00, but made alot of noise at this time in the courtyard, before heading to their room/s. This was quite a disturbance.
Apart from the above issues, overall, we all had a fantastic stay!!! The cherry on the top is that guests at this hotel are naturally granted free access to the theme park, since this hotel is within the theme park itself! And, yes, you do hear the rides, horns, etc, but this ends at 17h00, so the evening is peaceful, unless the other guests are noisy!
