“Special Celebration!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013

We decided to celebrate our 17th anniversary in style at the Saxon. The service is of the highest standard. When we arrived we were upgraded to a villa. The room is very spacious and beautiful with lots of nice surprises. The food was also excellent to say the least. The gardens, views of the city and the hotel is breathtakking. Thank you for making our anniversary very special.

Saxon is an outstanding hotel and provides an exemplary level of service and comfort in blissful peace despite being conveniently located for the City. However, having visited a few times previously, there was no particularly good reason to eat at the hotel as the food was fine but not on a par with the rest of the property.

However, with the opening of 500, this has changed. The new restaurant situated on the first floor adjacent to the Nelson Mandela suite is well appointed with 20(?) covers and a chef's table, where we dined. The food is probably not only the best in Africa but comparable to any top restaurant in Europe or North America. Preparation and presentation and produce were faultless in all dishes offering imaginative but not outlandish combinations, edging on the molecular but with the honesty pioneered by Noma and the Nordics. The wine pairing was similarly imaginative covering a broad spectrum of geographies and perfectly matching each course. Service from the kitchen and the waiting staff was enthusiastic with clear pride in what is being presented. Bravo, it makes the Saxon complete.

The spa is also outstanding and we had a wide range of treatments during our stay all of which were perfectly executed and with a weakening Rand, offering extremely good value.

Dear nowvoyager1,

I speak on behalf of Executive Chef David Higgs and his fantastic team at Saxon five hundred, when I thank you for this wonderful review of the restaurant.

Five hundred is the Saxon's experiential restaurant, based on the intriguing concept of food, wine and art. The chefs interact with guests and serve a unique gallery of artistic cuisine and wine pairings. The menus reflect the chefs' passion and inspired ideas, showcasing the freshest ingredients, simplicity and superior flavour.

We are all delighted you enjoyed the experience with us and on your next visit please do let sales@saxon.co.za know as we would love to make you feel even more at home with us.

We stayed in the Nelson Mandela suite at the Saxon. It was spectacular although very expensive. Worth it for one night perhaps. The hotel itself is beautiful and very well kept up, as befitting it's prices and reputation. It is a nice oasis in a city where there are a number of good hotels but no great ones. This is the best we have found for an overnight stay while coming or going on a safari experience.

I have been to Johannesburg on business many times over the years, and my preferred hotel is undergoing refurbishment, so I was curious to see what the Saxon would offer for the final leg of my honeymoon.

More business in terms of mood and feel than I was hoping for (high efficiency, but actually less personal touch), which suits some people I guess, but I prefer the more intimate feel of the Westcliff. If you want a bigger hotel feel, then this is the place for you. Choice of areas to drink and eat (all very casual), lots of staff and plenty of clients too - lots of 'day trippers' which I didn't like so much, but I guess for a hotel that talks about being the best hotel in Jo'burg, others want to see the experience!

We didn't try the spa but I had a look around and it looked very nice. Food at breakfast was plentiful and decent quality. Appreciated the free glass of champers at breakfast. All in all OK, but not the amazing experience I was hoping for.

Had I known how amazing this hotel would be, we would have stayed a couple of more nights.
It is no wonder people such as Oprah and the Clintons have stayed there.
Where do I begin? The decor is elegant, serene, beautiful. Our room was huge, with a private patio that faced open bush. The bedding was the best quality that I have ever experienced ---amazing. Everything smells delicious, the room, the sheets, the abundant creams and ointments. Extra special. The staff dotes on you, yet gives you your complete privacy. They knew it was our anniversary, so there were red rose petals upon the bed in the shape of a heart ---and upon the bed and bath mats. They lit scented candles, sent up champagne and chocolates. The restaurant is one of the best in Johannesburg. Sadly, we did not use the spa--but I wish I had.
If you are looking for pampering or romance, go! After a long flight, it felt like heaven.

As you pull up to The Saxon's gates you just know that you are going to have a special experience. The staff are so courteous and professional. The grounds of the hotel are stunning, and to have such a beautiful green expanse in Johannesburg is lovely.

The hotel is incredibly stylish, in my opinion, without being pretentious. I can fully understand why so many politicians and members of state grace The Saxon.

The rooms are beautiful and I only wish we could stay there more often.

The food is really amazing. We particularly enjoy lunch on the Terrace. I truly believe this is the most sophisticated, yet relaxed lunch spot in Johannesburg.

The wine list is superb, really terrific.

I have absolutely nothing negative to say about the hotel itself, and I think that this a testament to the exceptional General Manager in place at The Saxon.

Room Tip: The corner suites are stunning, especially the Presidential Suite. We were so fortunate to stay her...
