“The Pride of Johannesburg”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013

The Saxon is one of the best properties in Johannesburg. Luxury abounds, exquisite service and rooms are beautifully appointed with Bang & Olufsen electronics, stunning garden settings and fantastic amenities. Although I am a resident of Johannesburg, I have stayed at the Saxon on numerous occasions and it consistently delivers the best.

Their spa is absolutely fantastic as is the state-of-the-art gym facility. I really don't have a single bad word except perhaps the main restaurant is somewhat cold and the food is exceptionally rich. They do however make up for it with a phenomenal wine-list.

The Saxon has hosted numerous politicians and celebrities including Nelson Mandela and Bill Clinton. If it is good enough for a presidents...

I celebrated my 40th birthday party with 50 friends and family. From the start the staff (Tarryn) was exceptionally helpful. She became more of a star the closer the event approached. On the evening, Dumisane and his waiters were exceptional and not only looked after the guests but made them feel like royalty doing it. The food, venue and ambience was all out of this world!

Treated to a birthday dinner, bed and breakfast from my lovely partner......and what a treat it was! This stunning Boutique Hotel was such a wonderful experience, leaving us truly satisfied and really not wanting to exit those large entrance doors. From the very beginning including arrival at front gate, the service was exceptional. It was like to we're whisked into an entirely new world of your own little fantasy. Design, decor, colour and "African", all beautifully played out but not overdone. Well placed smaller rooms in common areas to wait or relax in and take in the surrounds. The pool which opens out into a well kept garden that takes the eye even further. As soon as we walked into our room it was like wow this feels amazing. The sunlight streaming in from the North on our little balcony overlooking the garden. Ensuite with all one would need including quality products. Indulging in the spa is a must, everything about the experience is just gorgeous. Dinner at Five Hundred was a true gastronomical delight. And breakfast is definitely worth waiting for, had probably the best Eggs Benedict ever. With everything else on offer being fresh & substantial. Going for a walk we discovered a rooftop garden where they pick their daily fresh herbs and vegetables from. Exceptional Boutique Hotel, distinctly different and a wonderful change from those huge big Hotels that possibly lose something special due to their size. We are definitely coming back to this one!

Room Tip: One good tip is be specific of what room you want and where you wish to be located. At first we wer...

We celebrated out wedding anniversary at the Saxon. We were gratified with the service at the Spa. From the time we arrived in it was heavenly. The staff were well mindful of us being there and assisting at all times. The breakfast is outstanding. The spa treatments are just the best and the therapists are very skilled. The facilities are magnificent. It’s a very well managed establishment with impressive service.

Arriving at this hotel sets the tone and standard for what you will experience..Well dressed security men at the ready to vet you before opening the most extraordinary huge and thick wooden electric doors... And that sums up The Saxon "extraordinary quite extraordinary"... Set amongst delightful landscape grounds of some 10 acres ( 4 hectares) you will pull up at the main hotel to be met by yet more polite and helpful security staff ready to help you up the steps and in to the reception..Not so long ago this was a private residence, difficult to believe but really true, before conversion and the addition of two wings that are the bedrooms and spa complex of the main hotel. The comfort, style and sheer understated luxury of this place is matched by exemplary and courteous service and attention of each and every member of staff that you will meet. And whether you eat on the pool terrace, the Koi terrace, at the sensational 4 or 6 tasting menu that is "500" under chef David Higgs or the bistro Qunu your culinary experience will not be disappointed. The basic "suites" are gargantuan and should you be up for a stay in one of their 2000' plus (180 sq m) Presidential suites, take a deep breath before you walk in... The 3 villas, 100 meters or so away from the main building, are each attended by 24 hour butler and chef service who cannot do enough for you. Ask, and it will be done !!! If the soup of the day is not to your liking they will make what it is you desire, subject only to ingredients being in season and available...For sure, mistakes happen and they don't get it right each and every time, but make no mistake, this hotel is unique and offers a truly incredible experience...

Absolutely amazing! Loved my time at the Saxon from start to finish. The rooms were spacious with beautiful décor. The staff were always on hand to assist and no job was to big or too small.
The grounds of the hotel are wonderful and the pool simply divine! If you are looking for a retreat that is not right in the heart of the hustle and bustle this is the place for you. It's an easy 10 mins into Sandton (the financial / shopping / restaurant district).

We used this hotel as a base when visiting several safari camps. This property is to say the least, fantastic! A 5 star rating is severly underrated for this place. Rooms were spacious, beautifully appointed with African tribal artifacts, and had a complimentary bar. The restaurant food was fantastic, and room service food was restaurant quality. The extras such as, spa, wines, and food were very fairly priced for the wonderful quality. The property is relatively close to the new financial center, but a ways away from the airport. Really not convenient for a one night stay between flights. The staff was top drawer and there must have been 2 staff assigned to each room. It was a very friendly atmosphere through out the entire complex. Going to Joburg for more than a night, then this is the place. Highly recommend!
