“Has great potential”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago NEW via mobile

We arrived 3 days after the hotel opened, having not been warned that the hotel was not really complete, nor had they had the opportunity to test the hotel and restaurant out prior to guests arriving. The comments made by other guests do reflect a lot of the frustrations we experienced. However, we raised our concerns with the Management Team whilst we were there and Mr Carre could not have been more empathetic about our concerns. All the staff went out of their way to try and remedy our issues I.e. Julanda, the spa manager, Priscilla and Ahstaak in Guest relations. This hotel has a stunning location and you just know that once it is complete and the teething issues are out of the way it will be a fantastic place to stay. We will be back to see it at its best.

Brand new hotel. Staff are very helpful. Electric carts to take you around. Restaurant very good. View of Johannesburg Zoo. Excellent restaurant with great food and service. A little hilly so electric carts come in handy.

My husband booked a room for us at the "revamped" Westcliff for our wedding anniversary. Upon arriving, the door did not open... which spoiled the "surprise a bit". We managed to open our door and walked to the only restaurant that is currently operational, Flames. Nice setting, but you could see teething problems all over, staff was running around crazy, my soup arrived half cold, but I kept quiet as it was clear that these poor people where extremely stressed! The layout is a little akward from where our table was, you could look up a ladies skirt quite easily, maybe something that needs to be looked at in the design of table setting? The restrooms still have paint marks around doors and some has no toilet roll holders. Our room was lovely, but it was so awkward when a staff member came knocking on the door, saying she wants to do a turndown of our room (at most 5star hotels, this is usually done while guests are at dinner), obviously more work needs to be done in training staff...... The room was nice, clean and comfy (once again, bedding the wrong way round-which I had to fix.. all of this can be achieved with the right housekeeping training) Our morning, which was meant to be a lie in, since we never get the opportunity with a 2year old at home, was met with loud noise from staff outside, so we where up just after 6. Breakfast was lovely, good selection of food and the wstaff extremely friendly. My advice for anyone whom wants to visit the hotel, is to go there in 6 months time, when the place is completely renovated. The View bar, looks amazing (still under construction) and I am looking forward to having afternoon tea there with friends soon.

Dear Linda R,

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on TripAdvisor following your recent stay with us. We value your feedback and were very concerned to read about your experience with regards to certain aspects of the service and noise caused by the construction of the spa complex. Please accept our deepest apologies for these inconveniences. We would very much like to have the opportunity to speak with you directly and will be contacting you. Many of the difficulties associated with our opening 7 days ago are promptly dissipating. We are looking forward to a future opportunity to welcome you.

The westcliff hotel has been a bastion of class and elegance in johannesburg. It was thus with great expectations that we booked for dinner shortly after the hotel reopened under the four seasons umbrella.

The flames restaurant is pitched as having an urban casual menu with reinterpreted South African classics cooked on the open braai, which sounded promising. The setting for the restaurant is superb - it has (in my view) the best setting to enjoy a meal in joburg. However that was the only saving grace - the rest of the dining experience was frankly very disappointing.

The wine list was limited to a selection of 7 wines (apparently as the wine fridges had not yet been installed). The starters of crab cakes and Caesar salad were decent. Mains were however poor. The first attempt at the venison burger (ordered medium) was overdone and lacking seasoning. The second attempt improved the cooking but the burger itself still lacked seasoning making the entire burger quite unpleasant. The other main was a simple rump steak with bearnaise sauce. The meat was cooked well but the bearnaise was flat and lacked any flavor to complement the meat. The pepper corn sauce was not any better - it was thin and watery without the creaminess that is normally expected. The chips accompanying the mains were average - I would have expected a little more from an establishment like the westcliff (twice fried chips maybe).

I knew it was the first week of operation since reopening so we were expecting a few service issues. I did not expect that the food would have been such a letdown. It's such a pity as if the food was able to match the setting, it would be one of the best places to dine in joburg. I hope that the feedback that was provided to the chef and operations team is taken on board.

I am a current guest here at the Four Seasons Westcliff, Johannesburg. I was warned in advance by management that the hotel is still under construction and that the lap pool, spa and most restaurants (except for Flames Restaurant) are not yet open (or even built). I was mentally prepared for things to be a bit rough around the edges, but I did not expect all of these issues.

I have been here for two nights so far and I still do not have (what I would consider) the basics. A functioning mini fridge, a napkin on the table at dinner, turn down service (skipped two nights in a row) and last night I was without electricity for several hours due (supposedly) to government rations of power citywide. I realize I am in Africa and that not everything is going to be perfect and pristine, but I am disappointed that the they seem to be overlooking the things that DO have control over.

CONTROL WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL.
AGAIN, CONTROL WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL.
ONCE MORE, CONTROL WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL.

Please fill my glass with water or wine when it gets below half, answer the phone when I ring the reception desk/concierge, provide umbrellas to guests when it is raining, have maps available of the area, pick up guests in the golf cart promptly *avg 15 minute wait), have more than 1 functioning/charged golf cart on a Saturday night, offer and explain transportation options at check-in to guests that do not arrive with their own car.

In addition, if you give a guest a long list of suggested tourist attractions (museums, shopping, etc) include the address, phone number, typical hours of operation, maps, etc. When it is windy and cold on the outdoor terrace at Flames Restaurant during the dinner hour, I'd suggest that you have strong heat lamps by each table so guests are comfortable and so they can continue to sit outdoors. None of these requests/suggestions are particularly brilliant considering that this hotel was functioning without Four Seasons for quite some time - what happened to this place?

Again, they are failing at the basics. This has nothing to do with construction or amenities - this has to do with being prepared/ready to open and being one step ahead of the guest. I am here in Johannesburg for the very first time so I am an easy guest to impress but instead I am counting the hours until my departure (11 more hours!).

The staff is overall very warm, kind and well-intended but at the end of the day that can only take you so far. You can explain away only so many problems, fumbles and blatant mistakes. I have no doubt that things will be in much better shape in 24-36 months from now, but there is a tremendous learning curve ahead.

Dear J Y

Thank-you for choosing to stay at our hotel and for taking the time to post a review on TripAdvisor. I was very disappointed to hear about your experience when we spoke together on the phone. As discussed we opened 7 days ago. Regretfully some early technical difficulties added to some of the imperfections you have brought to our attention. These are fortunately promptly dissipating, and we look forward to a future opportunity to welcome you to Johannesburg and other Four Seasons destinations.

The Westcliff has recently been taken over by the Four Seasons and we arrived there amidst there second soft opening . Or at least I assume so. The place is still under construction so don't exoect quite afternoon naps because the workmen yelling at each other will prevent that . The reception is elegant & understated & you are taken to your room in a golf cart. Our room was a delux king with a view of the botanical gardens . Well, once you had hiked up the stairs to your room , & got your breath back , your view was of another block of the hotel and a tree !!!! We called to query this & were told that the description of the view was maybe a little embellished . Are they kidding !
Back to the room . It was large with a substantial and beautiful bathroom but only had 3 little windows . The toilet door handle was missing parts so it didn't close properly and the cubicle had cobwebs and scuff marks on the wall. The sanitary bag dispenser was empty . The Nespresso machine still had used pods in them and the door to the room had to be physically forced open because it stuck.
Dinner was the next in the line of disasters .
The service was extremely poor with us pouring our own wine and drinks most of the time because the waiter never bothered to top them up. The first course went well but mains was terrible . Not the quality or taste of the food but the service . We had taken two guests for dinner and only one got her main course . Then we waited and waited .
