“Great overall experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2013

Very friendly staff from check in to check out. The rooms and bathrooms are very big and well equipped. The room itself looked like it was in need of some renovations, but not on an unacceptable level.

Breakfast was great and the views from the top spectacular!

If you are looking for quiet relaxing time ask for a room away from the pool and the business centre.

Overall a great experience in Johannesburg.

Room Tip: If you are looking for quiet relaxing time ask for a room away from the pool and the business centre...

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your kind words about our friendly staff. You are right, the rooms are in need of some refurbishment and in fact we are embarking upon this work now. From later April through until the end of the year, we will be refurbishing all of our bedrooms; as well restaurants and conference centre, please join us next year, and see the incredible “new” Westcliff.

Thanks again for your kind words.

Went here while in Johannesburg for business. The suites were the nicest I have ever stayed in, both in terms of amenities, size, and great terraces. The facility is like a Mediterranean village, with hidden paths and surprises everywhere. The view of the city was magnificent. Mobile phone and Internet access were all first rate. Multiple swimming pools, including one that is heated quite nicely. There are a few things to note, however. The place is build on the side of a very steep hill, so there are lots of steps. They have a shuttle service, but if you want to get from one place to another on short notice, you will get a workout. Found it quite humorous that the gym has stair climbers. The other thing is that the evening dining choices are limited to either the formal restaurant (good and reasonably priced), and maybe the sports bar.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your kind words about our wonderful “resort” styled hotel, nestled in the hills of Westcliff. As our Pastry Chef, Lindy is so skilled, it’s a good thing we have a few steps to work off that late night dessert.

The other bit of good news is that we are embarking upon a full renovation, starting late March, which will include a complete restaurant overhaul, thus creating more dining choices in the future, so get those sneakers ready to walk the hills after our culinary team amaze you.

Thanks again for your feedback,

Our experiences of The Westcliff were all positive, a couple of minor problems with the room were resolved quickly and professionally and the service was exemplary throughout our stay. The food in the main terrace restaurant was of a high standard and we would certainly stay here again on our next visit to Joburg.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your kind words about the food in LaBelle Terrasse, I will be sure to pass your remarks along to our culinary team.

I am not sure if you are aware, we are embarking on a new High Tea concept for April 6th, a very extensive High Tea buffet spread, with live cooking stations will be available in LaBelle Terrasse, with a special Chocolate Buffet, designed by our very own Pastry Chef, Lindy; please do stop by and sample some delectable treats !

Took guests for drinks to the Polo Bar - my word how disappointing! Huge dirty marks on the carpets, tired looking cushions on pool loungers, broken pots for topiary trees, service not great for a 5 star stablishment - don't know if I'll go back in a hurry!

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback on TripAdvisor, we honestly do value all feedback, hearing from our guests is critical to our continued success.

Further to the tiredness look and feel of the Polo Bar and the hotel, we are just starting a full scale renovation of the entire hotel, including the Polo Bar. We have 3 rooms off currently, which are being redecorated and the final design scheme will be decided by the middle of March, then the full project with launch into action.

We are all very excited to see the “new” Westcliff and I hope you will come back in the next few months to see the changes as well.

Thanks again for your feedback.

Absolutely horrific, cannot believe that my dream wedding has been cancelled because of "renovations". Absolutely no effort has been made to sort this out. TERRIBLE!!! I have many guests who have purchased their flights already and have been left to make other plans.

I am very sorry you feel we have made no effort to sort this out. Of course this is a difficult situation we now find ourselves in, thus the reason our Catering Team has been contacting all of the prospective brides & grooms and working with them to find an alternate venue. We are honouring the three (3) complimentary rooms for both parents and the suite for the Bride & Groom on their wedding night. We have also offered complimentary limo transfers to and from the hotel for these guests to the new alternate wedding venue; we are trying to make this unpleasant situation as stress free as possible for the bride & groom and their families, and of course we will assist with other tasks, should we be able to offer some further help.

I do apologize for this,

I was on a business trip and stayed. On my first evening, I seem to have only closed but not locked my safe after putting my jewellery in it before going to the gym. When I came back, I found a note that the housekeeper had called the security manager, who locked the safe. When he opened it, I found out that my jewellery box had been opened and gone through, and that one of the two 20-euro note disappeared from my wallet. The security manager knew the exact amount of money I had (later he explained that this is a regular practice). He promised to investigate who had had access to my room, to run a "polygraph" and to get back to me within a week.
Two weeks later I had to send two emails to the hotel before I got the following response: "Thank you very much for your email and follow up. I do sincerely apologize for the poor communication. We are actually in between Security Managers right now, and the new one starts tomorrow, unfortunately the Assistant Manager was not diligent enough to follow up with you." and that the "polygraph" was negative.
Needless to say, I have never expected such a thing to happen in a King Deluxe room at the Westcliff and to be honest - the manner in which this incident has been handles is more than disappointing and definitely doesn't match the reputation of an Orient-xpress hotel.

WestcliffGM, General Manager at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff Johannesburg, responded to this review, February 15, 2013
I am very sorry you feel the Westcliff did not handle this situation in an acceptable manner. When such a claim of theft is made in our hotel, we take it very seriously. We immediately open an investigation file, which comprises of statements from noth the guest and all staff who accessed the room, determined by a guest-room “lock interrogation report”. Polygraph tests are then arranged for all staff who had entered your room, and finally if the guest wishes to file charges with the local Police, we will arrange for an officer to be present to file a report, we unfortunately cannot file a report, it must be the complainant.

In this particular case, all the staff polygraphed showed “no deception”, so unless charges were being filed by the guest, the hotel has no further action in this situation. Once all staff have been interrogated, polygraphed and passed, we are only left with filing a Police report, however as earlier stated, this can only be done by the guest.

We do take safety and security very seriously in our hotel, thus the reason for the Room Attendant immediately notifying the Security Officer to witness the locking of the safe. Staff is trained in this regard, to immediately leave any room with visible valuables and contact Security to secure them, this is standard practice in South Africa.

I am sorry your experience and memory of the Westcliff is not a favourable one, of course if you would like to return, you are welcome to make your booking through the General Managers Office, and as a gesture of goodwill I will take care of your accommodation costs. We also hope that your memory of South Africa is not tarnished, this is a great nation, developing at an exponential rate.

Thank you,

Ian Jones

We enjoyed an exquisite and absolutely creative dinner at The Westcliff - including a wonderful view from the terrace, a professional and friendly service and some amazing details in the menu itself. The excellent composition of the menu, the choice of wine and the dessert (piece of art!) transformed the evening into an unforgettable experience.

The room was nice and clean, we especially liked the spacious bathroom and the really good quality of the beauty products.

In the morning we had breakfast with a variety of juices and egg variations in a relaxed atmosphere. Very attentive service again...

We will definitely come back to visit the Spa and the Pool area.

Thank you very much for your feedback and for your kind words about our restaurant and food, I have passed along your comments to our Executive Chef, always nice to have positive feedback.

In March we are launching a new “Higher” Tea, maybe if you have time, pop by in March and sample our new offering.

Thanks again for your feedback.
