“Fine place.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2014

Good for the price. The owner was very helpful with advice for what to see and do and how to do it. The wifi was not very good though. The area seemed pretty safe but you still have to be careful. I took a cab there for 480 rand, so arrange a shuttle from the airport.

We only stayed for one night but found this hostel to be very clean and well located. The room was nice and had everything we needed.

We only met the owner very breifly but everyone seemed friendly and helpful.

This hostel is in a nice location in Melville. We stayed in a double room out the back which was ok if you like cubby houses. It is very small but at least clean. The owner is probably in the wrong industry as he is really rude and seems to be in a bad mood at times. Don't ask to use the phone or skype! We also got an airport transfer and the guy didnt show up, after several calls he arrived and then took us through the dodgy part of town to pick something up from a friend.

I stayed in one of the timber cabanas around the pool for 3 nights. I found the backpackers friendly, with great fellow travellers, but I could actually get enough sleep :-) because there was no loud, drunken party scene. It's a really safe area, in easy walking distance to the 7th Street restaurants and cafés, ATM, and supermarket. The self-catering kitchen was spacious enough that I wasn't climbing over people, and kept neat and clean. Free wifi between 7 & midnight. Nice pool.I'd especially recommend the day tour/s with the guide Chico. I did 2 full day tours with him, because of safety concerns about Jo'burg and he was excellent. Very friendly and knowledgeable. He does the hostels pickups too.

Room Tip: Dorms looked clean but basic, there is camping space on a raised deck which looked nice, but the tim...

While we had a good stay at Melville international Backpackers, we couldn't help but notice how commercial and impersonal the atmosphere was. The backpackers itself is well-maintained and the staff is responsive, but there is a very limited common space (focused around the TV) and it is most of the time used by staff too. The kitchen was dated, with the microwave and stove working rather slowly) so it was a quest to cook in. However, Melville is a safe area to stay in Johannesburg and it was a safe base to have.

Pros: Affordable camping on a wooden deck above the small garden which gave us a unique experience of staying on a roof top. A big supermarket 15 mins walk, bars and restaurants within walking distance.

Cons: fairly ordinary place to stay. The owner not disclosing he gets commissions for the tours.

I had a great time here. Bibby, Peter and Ben(I think that was his name!) were very friendly and helpful, the rooms were spacious and clean and it was great having a pool to relax beside and cool off in after a day walking around Jo’burg! The kitchen area is fairly big as is the socializing area in front of the TV . The toilets and showers were clean. The area where it is situated is in a leafy suburb with roads coloured by the blossom of the jaranda trees. 7th Street is only a ten minute walk away where there are numerous restaurants. I found it very safe walking around at night. A short walk away are the Koppies. From East Koppies you get a good view of Jo’burg. The Military Museum is a 50 minute walk North East but well worth it. Turning right out of the hostel then right again there is a good fish restaurant plus a good fish and chip shop; plus there are two banks with ATMs and a Safeway supermarket. The WiFi was very good and always worked and Bibby organized a really good driver/guide called Chico to take me to the Apartheid Museum and Soweto. If it is your first trip to South Africa and you are worried about the bad press that Jo’burg gets regarding safety this will make a good starting point. I was a bit sad to leave.

The hostel is in a good located area and therefore picked by us. The staff was friendly but not really helpfull, all questions eere answered with very basic answers, not details, no additional information. The pool is too small and not worth the visit, the rooms are okay but old and fainted. The bathroom and kitchen, which are for communal use are ok but not always clean. To meet other travellers it is a good place to visit but probably other hostels are also around....
