“Even better than the last time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2013

Returned to the Residence in Johannesburg, slightly nervous since we had had such a great experience on our previous trip in January and didn't want to spoil the memory. We needn't have worried - this is still one of the best hotel experiences anywhere in the world, and we had a fabulous time again. Personal service, very friendly atmosphere and attention to detail mark the Residence out as a very special - and rare - hotel.

The Madiba suite is spacious and tremendously well-equipped (with its own wine fridge) and an expansive outdoor living/sunbathing area, complete with hot tub/Jacuzzi. I can certainly recommend this if you are planning to stay more than a day or two. We were there for 10 days and it was great to have so much space to move around in - both inside and outside.

As before, we would like to see some more adventurous cuisine, but we were delighted at the quality of the cooked breakfasts, which were really good (congratulations to Willard in the kitchen).

The most important reason why this hotel excels is the quality of the staff who are, without exception charming, friendly and helpful. By the time we left, we felt like part of the family. In an age where even the top hotels are increasingly large and impersonal its a treat to spend time in such luxurious - yet intimate - surroundings.

We'll certainly be going back.

Room Tip: If you're staying for more than a couple of nights, go fr a suite so you can have an outside dec...

We stayed at this boutique hotel for one evening en route to Botswana. Members of our party had travelled from Asia and rather than continuing onwards we decided to adjust to the time zone by spending a day in Johannesburg. We booked our airport transfers directly through the hotel, and while pricier than an airport taxi would have been, service was excellent and highly professional.

Most of us were jetlagged and slept for most of the day, but we still had time to enjoy the beautiful property which had two pools, a small gym, a gorgeous sky bar, several sitting rooms where you could relax. It's a small property with only 10 rooms so you may bump into other guests or you could just enjoy the privacy of your own well appointed room.

We were too tired to go out and explore the city so had lots of time to enjoy the property --- they have two pools, a small gym, a gorgeous sky bar, several sitting rooms to just enjoy the property, and large rooms.

We had all our meals in the hotel. Breakfast is included with the room rate and featured an assortment of fresh fruit, cereals, yoghurt, cold cuts, cheese, and lots of hot food options ordered from the kitchen (eggs, etc). Lunch and dinner were also very good but took a while to prepare so I'd recommend ordering up to an hour before you'd like to eat if you know what time you'd like to eat. They also had a good selection of South African wines available.

The Residence Inn is a perfect place to adjust to the time and place of South Africa. Between long flights and the start of safaris, we planned two nights in Johannesburg. We knew we would need to rejuvenate after 22 hours of travel and expected to need time for our bags to catch up to us. (Happily, KLM "disappointed"; our luggage arrived with us.)

We could not have hoped for a more hospitable and charming welcome than the Residence Inn. It is remarkable for its special attention to details. We occupied two of the nine guest rooms (and poked our heads into three others). Each is unique and wonderful. By way of an example, our room (number six) had a fireplace, crisp white bed linens and a deep bath tub. On our private deck, there were lounge chairs, an outdoor shower and a jacuzzi. The rooms were cozy and spotless.

The rest of the inn is amazing. There are two pools, a full-size tennis court, and several lounges where you can relax in the company of antiques, plush fabrics and mini grand pianos. Although the inn is small, it is a trick to find your way around. The haphazard design results from the amalgamation of a large private home and the former embassy of Japan, which accounts for the babbling fountains and koi ponds.

The service is attentive and friendly. Every employee is excellent.

With all of the big things managed impeccably, the details set the Residence Inn apart. There is fresh milk in room fridges for coffee. A selection of bath salts and oils enhances bathing. Ordinary white sugar bowls are dressed up with a confetti of coloured crystals. Crystal chandeliers abound, fracturing sunlight into prisms everywhere.

We were delighted with our two nights at the Residence Inn, look forward to our return, and wholeheartedly recommend it to other travellers.

Room Tip: Each room is unique. Ask about the individual features to choose the one that best suits you.

We stayed in Joburg at The Residence for 2 nights in May and wished we could have stayed for a week. The hotel itself apparently used to be 2 large homes that were remodeled and brought together as one boutique hotel. The rooms are exquisite and completely unlike a regular "hotel" room. The full breakfast (included) was a wonderful treat, as were the incredibly reasonable/low prices on wine and drinks. But what really makes The Residence stand out is the service. The people were amazing, anticipating our needs, taking care of us in every way. For example, 2 of us were enjoying early evening poolside drinks and out came a staff member with blankets for us on this chilly evening. We absolutely loved our stay! A tip - they offer a car to pick you up at the airport. Definitely do this, since The Residence is located in a difficult-to-find area of the city.

Room Tip: We had 3 rooms and all were different and wonderful!

We recently travelled to Johannesburg to visit an aging parent and conduct personal business. Unable to stay with family any longer we looked to a hotel for accommodation for the 2 weeks. How fortunate we were to find The Residence.
This is a small boutique hotel fashioned out of 3 residential homes in a quiet suburban neighbourhood.
Our first taste of the quality we would be experiencing throughout our stay was our meeting of Lucky, the wonderful gentleman who met us at the airport. His graciousness, intelligence and demeanour remained the hallmark of all our encounters with him, and Warren who drove us almost each day to our appointments.
On first arriving at the Residence we were greeted warmly by Sanet, Warren and Charity who work tirelessly to make their hotel the inviting, classy and beautiful destination any traveler could dream of.
We were delighted to be housed in the penthouse with its spectacular views, large outdoor living space and luxurious interior.
The buffet breakfast each morning, of fruit, cereal, yoghurts, meats and cheese, breads and croissants, a hot addition and tea/coffee sustained us each day until we returned in the evening to dine, in the fire warmed dining room, off the varied and delicious menu.
Every single person on staff was friendly, polite and highly professional. We soon felt as though we were priveleged members of this wonderful family. They cared about our family, could not do enough to help us and even treated visiting friends who came for dinner with the same warmth as we experienced.
This hotel has many special sitting rooms, eating areas, bar lounges and outdoor lounges , furnished with style and sumptuousness.
We were taken on a tour of the spectacular suites of this hotel and found each one different and unique and highly appealing.
The gardens are lush, well tended and so colourful and the fish pond on the bridge has fish which Warren cares for as well as he cares for guests.
We could not find a single area of hospitality lacking at this establishment.
So much care is given to the every aspect of a stay at the Residence.
We were sad to leave, but due to family committments we will soon be back and without hesitation we will call Sanet and secure our suite for yet another superb stay.

Room Tip: Each suite is beautiful, tastefully decorated and unique. We had the penthouse and loved the view an...

We stayed at The Residence for only one night while transiting Johannesburg, but really wish we could've stayed longer! Everything about our stay was perfect. The hotel is beautifully decorated, the staff very professional and courteous, and the breakfast was excellent. We arranged for transfers to/from the airport with the hotel, and were very impressed by the comfortable and reliable service. The suite we had booked was unexpectedly unavailable, so we were rebooked in the jacuzzi suite (which includes a private deck and jacuzzi!) and given a complementary bottle of champagne. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Johannesburg.

Room Tip: The Jacuzzi Suite, with a private hot tub, deck, and a fireplace, was wonderful!

This was the best hotel experience that I have ever had in my life ... Which includes the Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton, and Intercontinental hotels all over the world. The facilities are 5 star and the service even higher. In particular, I would like to recognize Warren, Keith, and Khuliso (my hired driver for 2 days), as well as Sanet, Cherry, Daniel, and Lucky.

Specifics include large beautifully appointed rooms, great location (quiet and convenient neighborhood, incredible food, many lovely common areas, excellent exercise equipment, pools and tennis ...all for a tremendous value.

They even sent a jacket I left behind to my next hotel via an overnight carrier!

I can't wait to return to this hotel and plan to recommend it to everyone traveling to Jo'burg.
