“Beautiful meal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

My boyfriend and I spent a wonderful evening at Clico Boutique Hotel. We came for a five course dinner with wine pairings. The hotel went out of their way to make us feel at home, we even had our own private room at no extra expense. The food was divine, wine was gorgeous and the service was impeccable. I would recommend to anyone looking for a special meal.

Very comfortable. I appreciate the allowing me to park my 1970 MGB behind the gate. The welcome and attention to my needs was well appreciated. Small touches such as the provision of shoe shine material were most welcome.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2014

We booked an anniversary dinner over Easter at Clico as we read brilliant reviews about the food. So we were looking forward to our dinner at this special place. But in the end we didn't really enjoy it that much.

On arrival, we were met by the manager of the night. We asked him if we could have drinks prior to dinner, and he proceeded to inform us that none of his staff arrived on the day, and that it was only him, the chef and another person in the hotel. We did end up sitting at the pool, but no lights were on, and no music or atmosphere. We did realize that no-one was staying at the hotel, so accredited it to this. Later the lights were switched on outside once we were almost finished.

The dining area was lovely and intimate, with only 2 tables set. Yet the air-conditioning was turned up so extremely hot that it was almost unbearable at times. The manager did inform us that another table requested it like that. Still, he couldn't turned it down a bit. As there was no staff, the manager and kitchen help was everything in the house, which did end up taking time. The food sounded good on the menu, but didn't deliver on the plate. The soup was very good, but the Risotto in the next course was clearly under-cooked, as it was still very grainy. My partner didn't even finish everything, and we did alert the manager to this. Our third course arrived after some time, which was Springbok loin. We were both really amazed at the small pieces of loin, as it was literally 2cm per piece. We realize that fine dining can mean small portions, but this was way too small. There were also clear differences between the 2 plates that we had, as there were different elements on the plates. Dessert was also good. After dessert we did receive a happy anniversary plate, but unfortunately anniversary was spelled wrong, and the treats on the plate wasn't appetizing. The 2 glasses of bubbly on the house was a nice treat to end off with though

The manager and the kitchen help did well with the service, but we just felt like the evening wasn't cracked up to what it is supposed to be. We expected more of the food, after all the reviews, and service also wasn't what we expected.

Don't think we'll be back, unfortunately.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your valuable feedback. The Clico team are very disappointed that your experience was not of the standard for which we are known. I intend to investigate each of your points and ensure that we learn in order to ensure these aspects are not repeated. I will contact you to provide feedback, and also would like to discuss amends to bring you back to Clico with the intention of redeeming ourselves.

Always a pleasure staying here. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, the rooms are lovely, the food is delicious. A great little haven in Jo'burg that I'd definitely recommend. It's tucked away on a side street, so fairly quiet too.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2014

I saw a review in an in-flight magazine about the food in this establishment. This made me decide to take a chance and book the venue for my wife's 60th birthday with family and friends. In all we were 14 people. The room holds comfortably 16 - 18 people. The contact person I dealt with on the front desk was Lucas. I did have some worry as no confirmation or menu was emailed after having asked for it a number of times. I personally went to Clico to see the layout and agreed in principle with Lucas what I expected. I organised flowers for the tables and the rest was done by the staff which was very nice. We also agreed on drinks ( basic wines ) and some Champagne which I supplied at a corkage fee of R 75,00/bottle. We agreed on a 5 course tasting menu, with one person a vegetarian some adjustments were done. All went quite well, except 2 meals were short at the fish stage and 1 meal was late at the meat stage. All was sorted eventually, it's just unsettling when some in the party don't have the food and all others need to eat so it does not get cold. The food was very good, well prepared with some unusual flavour combinations. The presentation was really excellent. We all gave it our thumbs up. Sadly the chef never introduced him/herself. The original desert agreed on was unfortunately not available so we settled for an ordinary fridge cheese cake which most quite enjoyed. When it came to settling the bill the tip was included, which I can accept, but what annoyed me was that an extra charge for 2x waiters was put on top. I find those "hidden charges" which get added without being discussed up front very inappropriate and at R 420/person for food the service surely should be included. The next problem I found that the wine agreed on was not served, instead the most expensive on the list was served! At his stage of the evening when everybody was happy and content I decided to swallow my anger and paid up without making a fuss. After all it was a special occasion.

Dear valued client,

Firstly may we thank you for your review and for making us aware of your comments and experience at our establishment. There are several points which most certainly are not our usual way of operating (from hidden costs to last minute menu changes etc) and I would love to discuss these with you in person and make things up to you. If we may, we would like to get in touch directly to iron this out and apologise - please expect a call and an email from me soon.
