“Spacious & clean rooms, friendly staff and in a nice part of the city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2011

Melville is one of the few places in Jo'burg where you can find restaurants which are open to the street. From this Guest house you can reach it in 5-10min walking. Walking at night on your own is no problem here.
Staff from the Guest house was very friendly and made my few days here very pleasant.
Internet is free and quite fast.
Very good price/value

5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2011

I stayed here for 12 nights in September 2012. The property is a typical Melville bungalow, divided across two buildings. The rooms are all well-appointed, comfortable and en suite with spacious bathrooms. The decor is a mixture of modern and 'shabby chic'. Because I was staying for an extended period and the room was available, I was upgraded from the smallest to the largest room at no extra charge. The largest room was the sort of size you would expect in a 5 star hotel and, while not quite as slickly appointed, was very comfortable indeed, with a desk to work at, sofa, windowseat, etc. Tea and coffee-making facilities, satellite TV and wifi access are freely provided in each room. There is also a good-sized and well-appointed lounge which people in smaller rooms could make use of.

The manager lives on-site as does the housekeeper. Both are extremely friendly and helpful. Breakfast is served from 6.30 until 11am; it is pre-ordered from a checklist and served at the time you specify, which is an excellent service. The range of items to select from is very broad, from a cooked 'English' breakfast to continental, and will suit travellers from most countries. Breakfast was always prepared promptly and was delicious.

The guesthouse is less than 10mins walk away from 7th Street, which is one of the few areas in Johannesburg where shops, bars and restaurants are open to the street (rather than being contained in malls), and where one can socialise in the evening. Melville is a good area to be based in Joburg because it's quite prosperous and a little bohemian so there are a few nice places to browse around nearby that you can reach on foot. It is close enough to the 'action' but far enough away to be peaceful (except when the neighbourhood dogs go into a barking fit or, occasionally, at the weekend when there can be some disturbances in the street - but again, the distance from 7th Street compared to other local guesthouses makes this rare). It is situated about 15mins drive from Rosebank Gautrain station (where you can take a train to OR Tambo airport), though the absence of metered taxis would make it difficult to get from there (try calling Mark, a friendly local taxi driver, on --, if you want to try). Otherwise Nomndeni can arrange an airport transfer for R300, which is about as cheap as you'll find anywhere else.

If you are going in winter, I'd advise taking a cardigan or similar as the rooms can be chilly in the morning and - as is typical in South African homes - the only heating comes from a small electric heater which you can switch on.

In short, this is a very comfortable, cosy, efficient, friendly and convenient guesthouse. I enjoyed my stay and would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: The photos on the guesthouse's Facebook page are actually very accurate, so go with them. The ro...
