“Dont stay here.!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2011

Myself and my partner stayed here for 2 nights, boy what a mistake!! We arrived at 10.30 pm after a long flight to find a filthy dirty what CANNOT be described as any sort of hotel,b&b! We had to go out to find somewhere to buy a coffee as no facilities in the room, only a bed, 1 chair and a rickety table with a tv.NO towels or anything in en suite only a filthy bath and shower with bits of other peoples left over soap, i have to say its the 1st time in my life i have had to shower with flip flops on!!! My partner went down in the morning to find the one and only member of staff we saw asleep on the couch, and had to go make us a drink, after having 1st washed some cups and kitchen was dirty and grubby. The pool and outside area was dirty and pool was a health hazard!! The breakfast was an omlette cut into 4 pieces and 1 sausage cut int 4 ( we had met up with 2 family members ) and frankly was a joke.. If it was nt for the fact that we were travelling to the eastern cape after our 2nd night we most definately of refused to stay! We actually left very early hours of the 2nd night as could not bare to be there longer than we had to. Before we booked i did read some reports and just wish i had taken notice, so if i can say anything it would be DONT stay here unless your ok with less than basic!!!

This place was quite the surprise to us, as the pictures online were quite charming... and the people had been very nice to work with us. As an educational group traveling all over South Africa & were expecting to be staying in some less-than-perfect places. All we really wanted was a place that was clean, safe & inexpensive. I think inexpensive is about the only one that met our expectations. The staff was very unproffessional, the rooms were weird & not very clean... they had our party scattered in 3 different wings of the house and I even had to go upstairs and share a shower with 6 boys because our shared hallway bathroom had none! There was no soap or hand towels in any of the bathrooms, and they looked at us like we were crazy when we asked for those items. One of our party even bought some sanitizing cleaner because she was concerned about her bathroom & simply cleaned it herself! Breakfast was awful and heated in the microwave. You had to wake someone up if you needed to get in or out of the property gate at non-business hours. We felt like unwelcome houseguests... NOT hotel guests. We moved after 2 sleepless, uncomfortable nights to nearby 'Melrose Place' B&B which was charming & delightful.

Room Tip: Try 'Melrose Place' B&B

+ The hotel staff were reasonably friendly and happy to help - one of the staff members actually walked us all the way to Melrose Arch (about a 20 minute walk) at night in the middle of winter so we could have dinner, and walked back himself! Also, the hotel was cheap, though you could probably find a backpackers in a better location for the same price. The house itself is gorgeous - it has so much potential, but it has fallen into disrepair & the owners haven't made any effort to enhance its qualities.
- The cons: I could go on - our room didn't lock (the door didn't even close, actually) & they couldn't find the key, the whole hotel was generally sad & not all that clean, they didn't answer the bell when we arrived so that we had to call them on our mobile (expensive!), weird residential area that's not really close to anything, the toilet is very audible so I felt ridiculously self-conscious peeing in the middle of the night, the shower was atrocious & frightening - not actually dirty when I touched it, but looked like a mouldy crime scene, had to request towels, no soap etc. Breakfast was ok, the kind of breakfast your school friend's alcoholic mother serves while holding a baby & berating 3 toddlers. The pool was dirty and unusable. Didn't feel very comfortable. My friend who was traveling with me absolutely hated the place and couldn't stop complaining, but I didn't mind it too much as a place to sleep - it sort of felt slightly third-world, and it's possible that you could find something better in the form of a backpackers for the same price (though I can't attest to that as I've never stayed at the backpackers).

The area in which the lodge is situated is not bad, and is close to Melrose Arch (an exclusive shopping centre). The photos on the website is of one room, the nicest room in the lodge. You can request that specific room before booking. We did not do that, and instead got a dirty looking room with a stained mat. The bath was dirty, and we kept our flip flops on when showering. The staff do not bother us, to such an extent that they did not even clean our room. Luckily, we just used our room to sleep in and did not spend much time there during the day. We would stay there again, if we were desparate.

We booked this accommodation for 2 of our clients as the Lodge was conveniently situated. However, when we spoke to our clients after their stay, they informed us that the rooms were dusty and did not look anything like on the website. There was no warm water for them to bath/shower with and they didn't have electricity for one of the nights of their stay. They said that the cleaning staff were very friendly and helpful but also mentioned that the owner had not been to the Lodge in months and that there was a lot of dodgy stuff going on here. This has been a deeply embarrasing experience for us and we will not be using this Lodge again.

The entire area is rather dodgy. We got to Sandton City Mall and called for directions to the house - the lady who answered explained that she did not know the area and could not help us. I had to go into the mall, find a bookstore and get a road map. When we finally found the entrance to the house - not on the street as that had been bricked up but on the street around the corner - we were let into a dark and filthy, musty garage by an elderly woman. We arrived at about 1 in the afternoon to find that the small pool/pond was green and the rooms extremely basic. When we walked in, there was a man sitting at the table and another lady who took us to see our rooms. She apologized for taking a long time to walk up the stairs and readily informed us that the reason was that she had kidney failure! The front office had shoddy bits of paper stuck to the wall with hand written notes concerning costs of laundry and internet use. In fact according to the signs the internet was not available from about midday until the evening. The childrens room had one table with a t.v. on it that did not work and a shower that they could not use as it had recently had silicon applied to it. The bedroom had odorous fumes as a result. There were no cupboards to put any clothes in etc. Our room had a table with a small t.v. that did work and a rocking chair. The bedding looked rather worse for wear. In fact the entire house and compound looked very dishevelled. The rooms look nothing like the website. The entrance to our room was through a make-shift kitchen consisting of a cooker and a sink then through a bath room that had a very used and filthy looking old bath and a toilet shoved behind the door. After ten minutes my daughter and son came to me and said that they could not bear to stay in the house so we left. We drove around Johannesburg for about an hour looking for another place to stay and eventually ended up in a hotel at a further expense of 4,000 rand. As I booked this on hotelclub.com it was paid in full in advance and despite numerous emails to the lady owner she has refused to date to refund any part of it. Daylight robbery.

My husband and I stayed there last week only red the other reviews when I came back glad I did or I would have cancelled my booking. The guesthouse is nice and quiet lovely garden to relax in we had a double ensuite room it was cheaper than our taxi trip from the airport which I found crazy. The staff were very helpful and the internet worked for me on my laptop it was helpful as the staff did some laundry for me as well as we just came from cape town and they charged us not much which was great did not realise how expensive everything in johannesburg was but we would definitely recommend bramley lodge to our friends its not a 5 star hotel but it has everything that a 3 star would have . Thanks again bramley lodge staff
