“Dreamy. Just dreamy.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2012

When I think about a boutique guesthouse in Sandhurst, JHB - and a French-style one at that - I think gilt, pretension, expense. Le Chatelat took me completely by surprise. For starters, it's good value - we stayed in a magnificent suite, with an exquisite view of the gardens and pool - for roughly the same price per night as many standard urban hotels. Then, the food and wine (served in our room and ordered specially) was outstanding. Finally, the staff were amazing - friendly, engaging, sincere. None of that awkward fawning nonsense I'm used to from upmarket hotels. I would definitely stay at Le Chatelat again, and not just for an anniversary (although it is one of the most romantic spots I've ever been to, and perfect for a special occasion). If you have a party or function, I'd grab the private cellar. Those guys know what they're doing.

Room Tip: Ask for a pool-facing room if you can get one.

I have just come back from my second stay at this wonderful place. Lets start with the decour. What an eye for detail and what stunning taste. The service is second to none and so warm and friendly. I do a lot of business travel and le Chatelat sets the bench mark for anything that I have experienced before. If you are staying in Johannesburg either for business or pleasure this is the only place to consider.

It's surprising Le CHatelat has not uploaded pictures of its beautiful suites, encompassing lounges and libraries and well set and kept convenience and washrooms! This property is really amazing, and the staff add the complete touch of excellence to it. Their unassuming and beautiful demeanour kept me wishing the trip was longer. Kudos guys, if you read this. Lodged at Le Chatelat with my husband on a combined business and romance trip to Sandton City and we ended up spending most of the time on the Romance portion. For a boutique hotel, it comes with a moderate price. We were treated to a sumptuous and exquisite dinner that kept the rest of the night... And the wine cellar- breathtaking!

Room Tip: We stayed at the suite. Guess all the rooms are suites and lovely.

This is a magnificent Neo Classic mansion set in the middle of Johannesburg's most opulent suburb, Sandhurst. Immediately arrive you feel you are on the set of a Somerset Maugham novel. The decor is wonderfully worn in and the mini versailles like garden finishes of the property beautifully. Our room was large and comfortable, but it did not have an air conditioner which could be problematic at the height of summer, however all the other touches were wonderful and they even catered for our vegan requirements at breakfeast. Of course the price was fantastic at R1450 per night for the two of us including bf. Considering the similar prices of the big brand soulless hotels nearby this is a winner and we will definitely stay here on business and leisure trips

What an unbelievable place! Have stayed in many many five star hotels in many many parts of the world but never stayed in a place so beautiful and in such a fabulous setting. The rooms are grand, the breakfast sumptious and the hosts divine (Sharon and Frazer), who pull out all the stops). Nothing wrong with the shower pressure, by the way.
If you need a very special venue don't go anywhere else. All in all - just perfect!!!!!

Stayed at Le Chat for a couple of nights before heading off on safari. It is a stunning place - beautiful garden, courtyard and decor. We were the only visitors (apart from the owners who were incredibly hospitable - for example they drove us to Sandton for dinner instead of us having to get a taxi). The only slight negative was the shower pressure in our room - could have done with a bit more umph (a bit picky!).

Le Chatelat really is in a class of its own. It is a stunning property set in beautifully manicured grounds. The rooms are breathtaking and very romantic. We had a wonderful stay here and Cheryl the Manager was fantastic, nothing was too much trouble and the breakfast each morning was lovely, one of the best in Joburg. I will certainly return.
