“Great except for the shower!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2011

I really liked the Protea Fire and Ice hotel in Melrose Arch - the only caveat being the open shower arrangement. The rooms are stylishly decorated, very clean and comfortable. They have free wireless internet in the rooms, which is a plus. The pool is very nice as well, and the milkshakes at the milkshake bar downstairs are amazing! The hotel doesn't have a gym, but you can buy vouchers for 120 rand for the nearby Virgin Active gym, which is beautiful (has an indoor pool and 2 full floors of cardio and weight machines, lots of classes, etc. - one of the nicest gyms I've ever seen). The Melrose Arch complex is also nice to walk around in (you definitely feel safe in the area) and has some good restaurants.

If you are a couple, the hotel has no drawbacks in my opinion, but the open shower can be awkward for friends traveling together (you are restricted to remaining in one side of the room while the other person is showering, since the curtain does not go all the way around).

This hotel surprised us in a positive way from the start. As soon as we arrived, fresh juices, sparkling water and fresh water were sitting on this very fancy table, in cocktail glasses.
The hotel takes Hollywood as it's theme, and with a lot of class.
The rooms are very clean and neat, not to say extremely original.
Staying in this area gives you the sensation of being in Miami's Ocean Drive, with bars, cafes' and amazing restaurants, like the Meat Co, where we had a 500g rump, cooked to perfection.
Room service doesn't disappoint either. The staff is attentive to details and very cordial. I personally recommend their Terminator burger, which is one of the best burgers I ever had.
I couldn't evaluate the gym this time, but a friend of mine said it's really good. The only inconvenience is that it is located two blocks awayfrom the hotel, which would be like two or three minutes walking. Nota big deal if you need to exercise, after all.
Whoever stays in this hotel, won't regret and will have a great time.

We spent the weekend of new 2011 at this hotel. it took the front desk staff 15 minutes to locate my booking. the rooms are cramped and the decorations are slightly over the top with almost everything being plastic. the serive throughout the stay was poor at the best of times. our room was only cleaned at 6pm after making numerous calls to get it cleaned. ordering at the poolside resturant requires loads of patience and a cup of coffee can take up to 20 minutes to be made. on checkout, the lady refused to validate my parking ticket despite having paid for parking on check-in.

A good opportunity to stay in an ultramodern environment that is new, clean, and trendy. Loved the size of the rooms, the hallway security system, and the friendly staff. Our breakfast was included in our tour price, and we enjoyed the omelets and the variety of the breakfast buffet. Great location in a shopping/restaurant area. We ate at a pizza restaurant while watching a rugby match on a huge outside screen...fun!

The local hotel for the office in Joburg. This was my second stay. Has lots of pluses - the beds are comfortable, nice clean rooms and well maintained and cleaned. Decor takes a bit of getting used to. Breakfasts are overpriced - you can have a coffee and a muffin in the hotel coffee shop or pop over the road to the Europa cafe. Overall though an excellent hotel.

This hotel is excellent! You are right in the gated community of Melrose Arch, which is filled with shops, bars and restaurants. We felt completely safe walking around this area at night, popping between bars.
The hotel itself is beautiful! The Protea chain has gone above and beyond with their 2 Fire and Ice hotels (other one in Cape Town is equally as nice). It's very young and edgey, with mirrors, chandeliers, dark colours and trendy features everywhere. The restaurant specializes in a large milkshake menu, which people come from around Johannesburg to sip by the pool. I flet somewhat like I was in Miami Beach! There is also a 24-7 deli on the main floor, great for after a late flight (or late night out in Melrose Arch).
My room was a good size, with an open-plan shower area at one end. I had a king bed with a plazma TV in the wall at its foot. The whole room is a black, white and grey theme but then they have added red rose pettles designed into the carpet... it's really cool.
I would highly recommend this hotel for the younge croud, or the "young at heart". It's by NO MEANS a hostel, but is priced quite low for how nice it really is. Perfection!

Young, trendy, perfectly located and some of the best staff we have ever experienced in South Africa. Even the Director is hands on, available and supportive and so is the whole staff - we stayed there twice and experienced great service both times. Expect a wonderful breakfast, a really trendy product which is prized 3-star and delivers almost 5-star... Very small teething problems seem to be attended to well and quick. We recommend business travelers to definitely stay there.
