“Good hotel, nice location but very dark lighting”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2013

This hotel is pleasant but the dark interior decor, be it my personal taste makes it seem quite dull and uninviting. The staff are very nice and the food is good. The area where the hotel is is very good as you have many shops and restaurants on your doorstep and it seems relatively safe.

Dear Garvey1984

It really is rewarding to hear that you thoroughly enjoyed our offering on our scrumptious menu and I can assure you that these kind words will be extended to our Food & Beverage TEAM.

We are incredibly passionate about our glamorous décor, and we feel that the ‘dimmed’ lighting, evident in a few vicinities of the hotel, completes the setting; that of chilled vibes and an eclectic backdrop. This all adds to an uninhibited and relaxed stay for our GUESTS.

Many thanks for taking the time to share your experience with us and complimenting the STAFF. It would be great to welcome you back!

Kind Regards

“A "modern" design not suitable for everyone”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013

Located in Melrose Arch, maybe it is a good area in Johannesburg but very boring unless you like expensive shopping.
Probably with a "modern art" idea in mind, the designers tried to make a different atmosphere for this hotel. But it looks very plastic or disposable, while gloomy and uncomfortable sometimes.
The reception area looks like the entrance of a shopping mall and staff behaves according to their mood, sometimes helpful, sometimes indifferent, in some cases they lack of knowledge of their own city, just try and guess what is your luck. The lifts are completely dark and unpleasant (at first I thought they were malfunctioning) and once you arrive in your floor, it looks like a mix of a backstage and a brothel, with all the pictures of the women serving you in each room (the pictures are from well known stars, but it's the first impression in the dark corridor). The bedroom is average size, with toilet and washroom separated. The shower is in the middle of the room, no separation (only a "nice" thin curtain in a rail), so not only it floods the floor and the carpet sometimes but it's not a good idea to share the room with someone if you don't want to be seen naked.
The furniture is very Ikea, already falling apart (specially the plastic/metallic ones). Tv channels selection very poor and internet very limited.
Room service menu has not many choices and 2 of the 3 occasions that I had to stay there the menu had missing pages so I had to ask for a new one and it took some time to be delivered (both menu and food). The food itself was actually good.
So, good points in this hotel: bed and food taste
Bad points: If you don't like "modern" concepts, gloomy places and plastic furniture, this hotel is not for you

Room Tip: I didn't like any of the 3 rooms that I had to stay in

Dear CaTiLo

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your stay with us last year. We highly appreciate your review, as we feel that being made aware of opportunities to improve will only gear us towards providing excellence.

It is rather troubling to hear of your experience regarding our front office. The open-plan reception area has been designed with the objective of an approachable and welcoming, yet highly functional space.

We are aware that the design of our hotel is far from the norm; therefore we have gone to the effort of acquiring furnishings and equipment that is of exceptional quality. In today’s world a fast and reliable internet connection is of utmost importance, and so we have recently upgraded our Wi-Fi set-up to ensure thorough enjoyment and maximum satisfaction to our GUESTS.

Our Front Office STAFF are often complimented on their friendliness, efficiency and know-how; however, we will continue to endeavour to improve their standard of service delivery.

The chef’s enthusiastic TEAM will be most pleased to hear that you too enjoyed their scrumptious creations!

Kind Regards

“Lovely hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013

The decor in this hotel reminds me a lot of The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas - and that is a big compliment. Its a funky design hotel with a really relaxed vibe, from the check-in staff's uniform & attitude, to the finishing touches in the room. Staff are warm, helpful & friendly. The room isn't massive, but has opening windows, an in-room shower and free wifi and is kept in an immaculate condition. Great location with lots of easy to walk to shops & restaurants.
Reception can get really busy, particularly when the Emirates crew arrive, but its quite efficient.
Didn't use the restaurant, but the bar was busy and fun, particularly late in the evening.

I stayed here because its a 2 minute walk from my office, but wouldn't hesitate to stay here again on business or leisure. It can get pricy though, as its very popular, so book in advance!

Room Tip: Apparently (but can't vouch for this) the water pressure on lower floors is better - random!

Dear NkkLndn

What a joy it is reading your complimentary review of our hotel and facilities. In reference to our décor, the idea behind it all was to evoke the spirit of old Hollywood glamour; all in order to deliver to our GUESTS a setting that is urban, experiential and edgy!

In line with this is our bar, which especially comes to life over weekends when we have our in-house DJ to entertain our GUESTS.

In fact, next time you're around, feel free to come to our restaurant and try yourself out with a “Shankadelic Baby” – an absolutely delish wine sauce infused dish.

Being a rather reasonably busy hotel, our reception area can understandably be a hub of activity; however we pride ourselves on making sure that we handle it well.

Many thanks indeed for taking the time to review us. We hope to welcome you again soon!

Kind Regards

“Very nice, tries hard and succeeds but after all...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2013

we are still in Jo'burg, this isn't NYC!

Look, this place is beautiful, it shows better a night like most nightclub/W-Hotel style places. The staff was helpful, young and not that experienced but very willing. The housekeeping staff worked so hard, the place is immaculate, so well kept.

The rooms aren't large but laid out in an open plan with a "shower curtain" like drape that separates the bathroom area from the sleeping area. A little "kitsch" but it works. The shower is a glass capsule so this isn't for the modest at heart.

Great sitting areas downstairs, beautiful bar areas and a very nice dining option. The Milkshake Bar is something I've not seen in my travels, definitely worth the trip.

Melrose Arch, I have to say, is very nice and very bizarre. Set amongst the highways and major thoroughfares, this is basically a mall with extremely high end stores (designers, clothing, some housewares). European sports cars zooming by at all hours and well-heeled locals and travelers all around the outdoor restaurants, and the restaurants are all packed. The juxtaposition of Melrose Arch and the surrounding areas is not lost on anyone which is why I say bizarre.

The hotel is quite nice, comfortable and has all the amenities.

Room Tip: As always, stay far away from the elevators!

Dear KarmaVolunteerVacas

It is truly great to hear that you embraced the vibe of the hotel and surrounding Melrose Arch Precinct.

Our dedicated STAFF are young, however we are constantly endeavouring to complement their youthful energy and lively spirit with continuous training to deliver service that is of a superior standard.

Many thanks indeed for the discerning feedback; we will convey to our Housekeeping TEAM that their relentless efforts are not going unnoticed.

Our open-plan rooms blend in with the character of the Lobby Lounge and bar; that of a relaxed setting that just oozes a cool ambiance. Our home, the Melrose Arch Precinct, might not be the norm, but that is exactly what we are going for: to be somewhat different, thus distinguishing Fire & Ice! as the place to be.

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your stay with us and we do look forward to welcoming you back!
