“Very Cool but...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012

First time in South Africa, really cool hotel, nice area but the staff could have been just a bit more helpful. I was trying to get information on how to get to around Joburg, the front desk lady gave info on the nearby mall, that'd be fine if I were interested in just designer prices...She looked dumbfounded when I asked her how to I get to museums and downtown Joburg...

Cool hotel though, sort of art deco, loved my room. Great breakfast. But for that type of hotel, I would expect free wifi...

Dear Castafiore002

Thank you for taking the time to post your valued feedback on Trip Advisor after your recent visit at Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch. It was an absolute pleasure hosting you and you couldn’t have given us a greater compliment by providing us with your constructive comments.

Whether we receive a compliment or a complaint, we do not turn a blind eye as we recognise the importance of feedback as an extremely useful tool in our day-to-day operations.

Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch offers GUESTS 150MB complimentary Wi-Fi per day; which we believe is in line with offerings from our competitors. Furthermore, our hotel is predominantly corporate; however we should have been equipped to provide you with the necessary information as requested. Clearly it is an area that requires attention and upon your next stay, we will be more prepared to facilitate your wishes by providing information such as historical museums like the ‘Hector Peterson Museum’ or the ‘Neighbour Goods Market’. It is vital that our TEAM members are equipped with this information in order for them to ‘sell our beautiful city’.

We look forward to welcoming you back for many future visits to come!

Warmest Regards,

Gabrielle Abrahams and the Fire & Ice! TEAM

I stayed at the hotel for one night only on a business trip and did not have enough time to properly explore the hotel. My room was funky, I liked the decor and the lay out of the room and the bed was really comfortable. I had an early continental breakfast in my room which was very good, so no complaints there. The only negative was that the toilet did not seem to flush properly. I did think that it was rather expensive for a four star hotel so am unsure as to whether I would stay there again.

Thank you for posting your review on Trip Advisor after your recent visit at The Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch.

It is such a pity that you did not get the chance to explore our beautiful property. We really have so much to offer, especially since the opening of our Lobby Lounge, and we certainly hope that you will come back to experience the entire facility.

The comfort of our GUESTS is top priority, and even though our rooms are often raved about, we still have a few concerns that are raised such as the toilet not flushing properly. We are thrilled to tell you, that the toilet system will be upgraded in the near future ensuring a better overall room experience for our GUESTS.

We are confident that our product is suitably priced vs. our surrounding competitors and if wish to provide more feedback as to where we can improve, please feel free to share your comments with us.

Upon your next stay with us, please do feel free to enjoy your breakfast in our private booth. That would definitely be a talking point as we would like your next experience with us to exude words such as edgy and energy!

It was a pleasure hosting you and we look forward to welcoming you back.

Warmest Regards,

For a quick business trip for a single traveller in Jo'berg, this was a great hotel. As easy ride from the airport, good conference facilities and tucked away in Melrose Arch with some nice shops, bars and restaurants to unwind in after lots of travel and a hard day's work. The conferencing staff were kind, efficient and helpful. And the outdoor terrace area is lovely. Great little cafe attached to the hotel too. Highly recommended.

Glitz, lights and "in your face" decor. Great if you are want something different and aren't looking for a spacious room where you need to work comfortably.

Stayed here on business and was disappointed. Bedroom is small, bathroom is separated by a curtain, shower is small, basin was blocked and toilet never flushed properly. Got the distinct impression that this hotel was put together in a rush and on a low budget.

Pity about the above as the staff are superb and must get 100% for friendlinss. The location is also excellent - situated in Melrose Arch where safe, close to Sandton, Rosebank and the "old" CBD and suurounded by more shops and restaurants than you could ever need.

Also used the gym where the running machines are new but near the bottom of the range! What a pity as this hotel could have so much more going for it!!

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments on Trip Advisor after your recent visit to Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch.

We sincerely apologise for the disappointment you encountered as a result of the maintenance issues. This information will be really useful as we can now focus more diligently on our room checks ensuring the functioning and maintenance of the in-room facilities.

Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! is all about the glitz and the contemporary feel is guaranteed to spice-up any visit to Jozi. It is aimed at the traveller who enjoys being amidst the energetic urban vibe of the cool city life. The design concept is to make clever use of available space. The room has an edgy and urban design with fashionable techniques and features. Fire & Ice! is a genre with a new age take on comfortable and social hotels. The design and comfort is often raved about and perhaps a suite would be more to your taste. Be sure to reserve a corner suite on your next arrival!

We have recently introduced a fitness room by listening to our GUESTS and acting on their needs. The gym equipment range was specifically sourced and imported for our property to create the feel set by international standards. We will keep your comments at hand should we be doing a review in the future.

We are also very pleased to hear that you had found the STAFF to be outstanding and friendly. Edgy and energy are words that will exude from each and every TEAM member in terms of service delivery.

Please be assured that we are committed to ensuring that every GUEST enjoys a wonderful stay and positive experience with us. We know that we achieve this, as we are inundated daily with positive feedback from our GUESTS. However, we are aware that our efforts are pointless if we do not get the basics right consistently. With your valuable feedback and our dedication to you, we look forward to welcoming you back so that we can prove to you that we are truly proud of our product, services and facilities.

Warmest Regards,

Gabrielle Abrahams and the Fire & Ice! TEAM

Stayed here with family a couple of weeks ago. Felt very safe at all times and staff were very welcoming. Decor was not to my liking and was definitely overdone with the whole 'Old Hollywood Glam' thing (we had huge pictures of Audrey Hepburn and Naomi Campbell watching over us as we slept). Our rooms were OK, but we asked for a room with 2 beds + an extra which they said they would do but didn't so 3 of us had to share a double bed! I shared a room with someone and it was awkward at times because the bathroom was part of the bedroom so there was no separation apart from a shower curtain which was odd. I must say the food was really good, the breakfast especially surprised me as they had many options that were all really good. If you want to eat out in the Melrose Arch complex I recommend Moyo. They had great traditional North African food in a great location and they even had singing/dancing people. Overall I recommend this hotel for more work oriented people but the food and location is great!

Room Tip: Try ask for a room facing out of the hotel, as ones facing in to the hotel complex see a constructio...

Thank you for taking the time to review Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch on TripAdvisor.

The details of your experience have provided us with more insight and your helpful feedback will allow us the opportunity of addressing the TEAM regarding your concerns.

Although our rooms were designed to accommodate a maximum of two GUESTS, it was not our intention to cause discomfort for the third GUEST. Old Hollywood glamour is the décor which flows through the hotel and it is unfortunate that you do not share our thoughts. The décor is a unique concept and a definite talking point, yet the cleanliness of room and the comfort of our GUESTS receive top priority.

We thank you for highlighting our fantastic breakfast offering, we will be sure to extend your fantastic comments to the Food & Beverage TEAM. We hope that you tried our mushroom cloud and along with other dishes from our new menu.

Without a doubt, there are some many good restaurants within the Melrose Arch Precinct and we will be sharing your experience, in particular, with the Moyo restaurant.

Thank you once again for taking the time to comment on your stay and we hope to have the opportunity of welcoming you back!

Warmest Regards,

Gabrielle Abrahams and the Fire & Ice! TEAM

Spent three nights here on a recent business trip to Jo'burg. Greeted with a smile by the check-in agent at reception, who offered me a cup of hot chocolate while she checked in. Check-in process was fast I was informed of the various facilities at the hotel, most of which are on the first floor. My room was on the 5th floor facing out over the front entrance to the hotel. The room was large, had a very comfortable large bed, adequate desk / work area, tea & coffee making facilities, in room safe and the (very small) TV with the usual selection of DSTV channels. Was also nice to stay in a hotel room where you could open the windows …. Was nice to get some fresh air into he room. Rather randomly the shower and basin were in the main room area, but as the room was large it seems to work. The toilet was in its own separate room and had a door.

The bar on the first floor was great and all of the staff encountered were more than willing to offer any assistance required. Reasonable selection of beers, great South African wines and the usual spirits.

Room service was good value and like most of South Africa the food was excellent. For those with a sweet tooth, the extensive list of milk shakes should keep your sugar levels high, but be warned, they ‘full size’ is huge !!!

Great location, close to all the restaurants and shops in the Melrose Arch area, close to Wanderers for those wanting to watch cricket and only 20-30 minutes from Sandton which is where we were working.

Only real issue was the TV was too small espcially as there were a couple of big sporting events on that I could watch in the evenings.

Room Tip: None of our travelling group (6 people) had bad rooms and we were on various floors and sides of the...
