We spent two nights here recently, before and after a trip to Durban. Ginnegaap creates a great first impression: it's a lovely place and we got a great welcome. Both rooms were very attractive, comfortable, and equipped with thoughtful extras, such as a really good range of current magazines, wine glasses (and cork screw!). Restful colour schemes and plenty of natural light help to create a really pleasant feel to the bedrooms and also the breakfast room. There are also plenty of spaces to sit outside and appreciate the garden. Breakfast was delicious: some imaginative choices alongside the usual breakfast staples. The location in Melville is ideal - just a quick walk to some great bars and cafes. (We particularly liked Melon, Lucky Bean, and De La Creme.) The owner took the time to introduce herself and ensure that we were comfortable and happy. We both instantly loved the place, and will definitely stay there again when we visit Johannesburg in future.

The Ginnegaap Guest House is located within a short 5-10 minute walking distance to 7th Street and great restaurants in Melville. The rooms were very clean, reasonably priced, and well-maintained, with plenty of hot water for bathing. Somewhat cold here during the winter months, but a small space heater provided sufficient heat to warm the room. The breakfasts provided were excellent and with plenty of variety : eggs any way you liked them, excellent yogurt/halvah and nuts, breads and cheeses, etc. Wireless access was free, but there is no personal computer available for guest use. Corlien, the manager, will print boarding passes from her business p.c. as needed, but otherwise you will be stuck with local area internet cafes, which are also within walking distance. Good restaurants on 7th include the Lucky Bean, Melon, and the Loft. Rooms that are accessed outside seemed quieter than those inside due to noise generated by traffic to the dining room Room #3 is outside, had some limited street noise and a barking dog next door, but generally very quiet after 10 p.m. or so. Good amenities, iron, hair dryer, coffee pot w/ free coffee/tea, water is potable. Site is very secure - my room actually had 5 keys to it, one to a small outdoor patio, one to the room door, one to a iron grill in front of the room door, one to the main building and one to the locked gate at the building's perimeter. Sometimes difficult to reach the gentleman staying on-site 7/24, but eventually he would arrive. If you do a Soweto tour, consider Eunice with a Taste of Africa.

No need to reiterate the review that have already been published. It exceeded my expectations in terms of comfort but if it's your first time to Johannesurg you have to realize that public transportation is lacking especially when compared to Europe. Depending on what you have planned, seeing Soweto, downtown, or the apartheid museum, isn't the most convenient but definitely doable (I did). Nice, neighborhood. I felt completely safe the entire time. Will stay there again.

i stayed in jo'burg between a business trip to the congo and a leisure trip to malawi, and was very pleased with finding the ginnegaap. like other reviewers i was so thankful to corlien for her prompt and helpful service/advice. the guesthouse is situated in a lovely little garden and i was charmed by the old details inside of the house. it's tastefully furnished and feels secure and welcoming. the complimentary breakfast is wonderful. lastly, the neighborhood around it is pleasant and welcoming with bookstores, cafes, and restaurants... a neighborhood with much more character and warmth than sandton. highly recommended.

Two friends and I stayed at the Ginnegaap in October. We wanted to be in Melville, a little further away from downtown. It took about 40 minutes by cab from the airport. We really enjoyed our stay! Corleen, the owner was very friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed Thomas, an employee there with a great sense of humor. We had our own little apartment with a kitchen at a very reasonable price. Everything was clean, modern and nicely decorated. A generous cooked to order breakfast was on offer in the morning, plus tea in the room. Corleen stored our luggage for us while we went on safari in Kruger park which was very helpful. It was a great experience overall and I would definitely recommend staying there next time you are traveling to Joburg.
