My wife and I thought doing a bike tour would be a relaxing way to see Soweto. It certainly was. We meandered along at a leisurely pace, stopped at a few places, and enjoyed the food.
The problem was the price. It cost R480 or ~$60 per person for the tour. For that price, no matter what country I'm in, I would expect to have comfortable bikes and a highly qualified tour guide. The bikes were all junk - brakes that didn't work, seats that didn't adjust, wheels off kilter, etc... In the mean time, the tour guide was NOT highly qualified. She was very friendly and fun to chat with, but misinformed. As we were staying with family, we shared some of what we learned with highly educated S. African's later that day. Apparently, we had been entertained but not very well educated.
In addition, they said they could pick us up in Joberg's Northern Suburbs for a "good price." When we got there, it turned out the price for the trip was R350, which is not a discount in the slightest.
For R240 per person, this is 4 stars. For R160, it's five stars. At the currently pricing structure, it is a rip-off.

Hi! Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear you did not have such a great experience on our tour and that we did not meet your expectations. It seems as our operation was not 100% up to standard on the day of your tour and we are truly sorry about that. However, our guides are well trained and they are all from Soweto, they have been doing intense studying on Soweto's history and them being from the neighborhood puts them in a good position knowing life and culture of Soweto. We always make sure to include a "fun" element on the tour, we use singing, dancing and exposure to traditional customs as a way of "lighten" up the mood, perhaps it was too much of this element and not enough of education on history for you and we will definitely take this in to account!
Regarding our pricing - we do believe we offer good value for money and being a Fair Trade in tourism certified tour our guests can rest assure parts of their spending goes back to the community and to people around us. Regarding our shuttle, although it can feel pricey we beat as far as we know any cab or private shuttle service in Johannesburg.
