AVOID!!! Before I commence with my review, do a search on the internet about this place and read into what other people say. Nothing is good!
8 of us were booked into the place for 27th, 28th June 2010. We were travelling up from Jeffrey's Bay to take in the England v Germany game in Bloemfontein. Due to the lack of available accommodation in Bloem this was the only place we could get. They charged us R500 per night (not far off £50 each a night, bed only). Knowing that England supporters were arriving in great numbers and no accommodation to be had they were taking everyones eyes out. We had to deposit the cash directly into a bank in JB, have it confirmed that it had gone through, then get the bank to fax confirmation to the Backpackers place before we had our rooms confirmed.
When we checked in we were met by Terry I think his name was whose language wasn't that pleasant and didn't sound to impressed by my comment regarding R500 per night. We had been placed in our own lodge away from the backpackers place with our own rooms. Thinking this wasn't too bad we took our keys and headed to our new home for 2 nights. This place was about 5 minutes drive away and we were met by security at the gates to what turned out to be a Hall of Residence, but it was being used as extra accommodation by the Backpackers place to house the supporters flocking into the city while the usual inhabitants were on their holidays.
We were on the second floor and the the corridors resembled that of the film "The Shining". We were just waiting to see a kid come round the corner on his three wheeler and Jack Nicholson to come a knocking... The room if you can call it that was small to say the least and the saying, "It was to small to swing a cat" was correct in this case. The place was dirty and the linen and Quilts looked like they had been on an age. Everyone was fuming. The toilets and showers were communal and we ended up using the lasses ablutions as they at least had hot water. The rooms each had a bed, a small table and a locker. If we had been charged a tenner then fair doos, but fifty quid for this doss hole was taking the p*ss. Our friend from London phoned up Terry to voice his complaint and was told to "[--] Off Pom". Not a good way to treat your guests, but reading the other reviews elsewhere seems to mirror his disgraceful attitude to others.
We found out that the Lodge or Hall of Residence we stayed in earned less than R100 (less than a tenner) out of this arrangement and the rest was banked by the Stockbroker Terry at the Naval Hill Backpackers Lodge.
Probablies just as well we consumed plenty of alcohol before heading unsteadily to bed as I can only remember waking up in there and leaving the place in the morning.
For anyone contemplating staying here, then think very hard and I would advise any Englishman not to give your hard earned cash to this rip off merchant. This was the worst accommodation and the most expensive that we had experienced on our travels following England in the World Cup. From Soweto, Kimberley, Beaufort West, Cape Town, Knysna, Jeffreys Bay, Addo and unfortunately finishing in Bloemfontein with the humiliating defeat at the hands of the Germans this wasn't the best way to finish what was an excellent trip. We had been met with nothing but kindness all the way through by the South African people and it was a shame this place and this person did not match what we had already experienced.
The tourist organisations in Bloemfontein should look further into this place and the means and methods this fella uses as it also reflects on the City itself.
