We only had the pleasure of spending 2 nights recently at the Pumba Private Game Reserve which I can only describe as being amazing. It was, without doubt, the highlight of our trip to South Africa.

There are 2 types of lodge at Pumba – the water lodges and the bush lodges. We stayed in a water lodge which was situated in front of Lake Kareiga, a lake situated within the game reserve. The interior is very in keeping with its surroundings and yet at the same time manages to be luxurious. The front of our lodge had glass double doors which opened out onto a view of the lake and the Hippos bathing! Each lodge has a plunge pool but unfortunately it was too cold for us to dip into during our stay even though it did look very inviting. A complimentary mini bar is included, binoculars, a variety of wildlife books and they also provide a free laundry service. The bathroom is well stocked with toiletries and even has insect repellent just encase you can’t escape the smaller creatures in Pumba!

Our package was all inclusive; aside from the accommodation, food & beverages, 2 game drives per day are included in the price. When you consider the quality of the food served, the standard of accommodation and of course the game drives, it does actually represent good value for money. The food was divine and very plentiful with an excellent choice catering for all tastes. Let me tell you Pumba is not good for your waist line!!! Breakfast was gorgeous and really was something to look forward to after coming back from our morning game drive. Between 1.30 and 3 lunch was served after which we went on our 2nd game drive. On our return, between 5.30 – 6pm we were greeted with a glass of hot chocolate and hot towels. From 7pm dinner was served and once again the food was gorgeous and always presented beautifully.

The owners of this game reserve are very fortunate to have extremely welcoming and helpful staff that also appear to be genuinely passionate about their work and the animals within the reserve. Simon, Loisya, Robert and Freedom to name but a few, really went to great lengths to ensure our stay was enjoyable and memorable. No matter what you asked of them nothing was a problem, they were always keen to help regardless of the hour, morning or night!

I can’t but give Pumba 5 stars even though we only spotted 2 out of the “Big 5” which was a disappointing result for us. Through no fault of Freedom, our ranger and guide who was truly excellent, the Buffalo, Leopard and the Rhino weren’t to be found. I think we were just plain unlucky and that this was the exception rather than the norm. From what I recall, Freedom has only managed to see the Leopard a handful of times in the wild, however we had hoped to see at least 4 of the “Big 5”. One has to bear in mind that this is a game reserve and not a zoo; thankfully these animals have the freedom to roam around and are not always willing to make an appearance purely for the satisfaction of the guests! Regardless, the white lion cubs more than made up for our disappointment, these 2 are the real stars in Pumba at the moment.

Stayed for 3 nights. Was a great experience as it was my first safari lodge. Gret with all ages I noticed. Really was amazing to see such pretty wildlife and nature, with a great guide (Peter). Fantastic Rooms, and views. Delicious meals.

“A Perfect 5* Game Reserve”

Simply an amazing place and everything about it is without doubt 5*. We were fortunate enough to spend 3 nights of our honeymoon at the Water Lodge and we would have been happy to spend a lot longer there. Our days started off with a morning safari drive followed by lazy days sat on the balcony watching hippos in the lake and then scanning the far bank for everything from lions and a jackal to warthogs, wildebeest, rhino, antelope and giraffes. In the late afternoon we’d enjoy another game drive followed by dinner and an evening socialising with others around the log fires. Oh and the food, this really is to die for! For breakfast you’d enjoy whatever you wanted, lunch would be three courses and then in the evening there would be another lovely three course selection. This being South Africa the wine was obviously excellent and the all inclusive mini bar was a very nice touch. Simon and all the other staff were truly excellent, nothing was ever too much trouble, flight check-ins, other accommodation on your holiday, they sorted everything out for us. The knowledge of Zulani, our guide on the game drives of both the flora and fauna and the park itself was excellent as was his ability to spot the game. We also liked the fact that the lodge area was not fenced in, one day we had a large bull elephant right outside the front door of our lodge!

Our room was superb, very spacious with a huge bathroom, a very large bed, lovely bath in the room, wood burner to heat the room and to top it off a large, private balcony complete with a private plunge pool to cool off in. Throughout our stay there were loads of the smaller touches which really emphasise the difference between a 4* and a 5*, I won’t share them all with you here in order not to spoil some of the surprises you’ll experience if you stay here!

Tip: If you drive to the reserve you’ll have to drive through the park on the bumpy tracks designed for 4x4’s to the lodge. Contact the staff and they can book you a reasonably priced two-way transfer to the airport.
Tip: There’s a free laundry service, particularly useful if you’re on a long holiday!

Room Tip: In our opinion the Water Lodge has the better views. Also room 6 has a bath overlooking the water.

Pumba is an amazing experience enjoy the feeling of being well looked after with friendly staff who can't do enough. On our last day we had the whole place to ourselves so instead of spending time alone together they arranged for Cleo our guide to join us for lunch down by the bird watching hut. We expected a couple of beers and some sarnies but got full on table service and a 3 course meal! The rooms are just lovely lovely, lots a space, comfy beds and housekeeping even did our washing and ironing! Spoilt rotten!

Really good with kids. Really good with Adults. Experts with Animals. Best safari I have ever been on. They even do baby tours for youngsters.
Sundowners and night drives... the lot.

Room Tip: The Bush Lodge was quieter and more intimate.
