5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2012 via mobile

It was our third stay in The Windermere Hotel and for us it is the one and only choice when coming to P.E. No need to repeat the other guests comments as it is just excellent. The location, the huge rooms, the food and the service, which always exceeds your expectations makes it our place to stay when travelling to P.E. for business. Looking forward to next year when returning to South Africa.
This is one of the very few places where you would love to vote more than 5 stars !
Thanks again
Matthias

We stayed here at the end of our drive on the Garden Route and prior top going into Kruger so we were only here for two nights but the room was so good that it merits a report. The room was huge and beautifully appointed. The whole hotel was really welcoming and friendly staff ensured guest comfort. The only negative point we could raise is that when arriving late at night and not wanting to go out to a restaurant there was no facility for offering any substantial food. I do not see this as a fault as they are simply not set up for that but access to a takeaway delivery might be an additional service to consider.

My partner and I stayed at the Windermere for less than 24 hours. In fact we were only in Port Elizabeth because it was our last stop on the Garden Route. But the hotel was so charming and oasis-like that I had to write a review. Our room (909) was spacious and modern, with a huge, luxurious bathroom, and a balcony overlooking a pretty courtyard. The outdoor lounge area on the ground floor had great magazines to read, and the mini-bar in our room was well-stocked with surprisingly inexpensive beverages. When we arrived (after a long sweltering drive from Knysna and a zip-lining tour through Tstsikamma National Park), I headed straight to the lovely plunge pool, which I had all to myself. The service was also great. When I told the staff that we would have to get up at 4am the next day, they offered to bring us breakfast before then. (I declined but appreciated the offer.) They also kindly helped us to get our car out of their garage at that very early hour. The only problem was the drain in the shower, which seemed a bit clogged. But it really wasn't that big of a deal. A more pressing problem appeared to be the neighborhood around the Windermere. Safety was obviously a concern. One can't simply enter the hotel; one has to buzz in and announce oneself through an intercom. There was also electric fencing around the hotel perimeter, and 2 different staffers warned us not to walk around the neighborhood past 10pm. One more thing: one staff member was unable to recommend a neighborhood restaurant worth checking out, which I thought was a bit odd. After all, asking for restaurant recommendations is pretty standard, and sadly, the restaurant we ended up at was sub-par. But overall, these problems were minor, and obviously, the hotel can't be held responsible for the state of the city/neighborhood, which is why I'm still rating the Windermere as "excellent."

Having taken heed of what others on here had said we took a chance and booked for a 2 night stay at the start of our holiday and we are really glad we did. From the moment we arrived it was obvious we had made a great choice as the welcome could not have been friendlier. We were shown to room 9 which was stunning, huge room, monster bed and a fabulous bathroom. The hotel is a classic small boutique style affair which had a very warm and friendly appeal and whilst some may not appreciate the hotels location it is only 1 minute from the beach front and only a 15 to 20 minute walk from a good selection of bars and restaurants. Breakfast which was included in our room rate was excellent, the service for things like tea, coffee and snacks could not have been better whilst the mini bar in the room was well stocked and very very reasonably priced. All in all this was a great find and the perfect start to our Garden Route Trip.

Room Tip: The view from room 9 was probably the best of all the rooms and the overall size and comfort level c...

Huge rooms, three to four times larger in size than those typically encountered. Even with the furnishings, which were adequate, there was still a lot of open space. Lovely bathroom, very modern and spacious, and we really like the radiant floor heat! The large balcony provided a great place to greet the morning. Staff provided exceptional service, went out of their way to be helpful at every turn. Interior courtyard and gounds were immaculate, exquisitely designed and beautifully maintained.

Wow, wow and WOW! I LOVE the Windermere. We have just stayed there for the third time and we are once again blown away by this stunning establishment. I really feel at home here thanks to Caroline and her friendly team. The rooms are spacious, clean, beautifully designed, luxurious and very comfortable. The bathrooms are huge and the showers, the best! The main area is very elegant and chic and certainly makes this one of the best (if not, nr 1) places to stay at in Port Elizabeth and I will recommend this hotel to everyone going to PE.

We really lucked in with this terrific little hotel in Port Elizabeth. The service from Carolyne and Florence in particular was fantastic - our room was just beautiful - and if there was more to pull us back to Port Elizabeth we wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. Just a lovely hotel in which to stay. I read in a previous review that it is a little difficult to find, and we did drive around the block to find it - but once inside you are definitely not sorry. Hopefully we will get back some time.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Windermere is a hip, stylish boutique 5 star hotel which brings the historic Indian Ocean port city of Port Elizabeth a new sense of style and occasion. Situated in the trendy beach suburb of Humewood, a short walk to Kings Beach and the "Blue Flag" status Humewood beach. Designed with elements of contemporary chic and decorated with custom made fittings and furniture, the defining feature of the hotel is the tranquil courtyard, cosseting one away from the busy outside world! The nine large luxury rooms provide spacious sitting areas, mini bars, satellite TV, DVD, air conditioning and heating, safes and a dedicated IT port (the entire hotel is also wireless compatible). Enjoy breakfast al fresco in the courtyard or indoors, a room service menu is available for light lunches and dinners, however most guests enjoy the luxury of choice – some of the city’s top beachfront restaurants are within walking distance! The Windermere has an ideal location – walking distance from beaches, restaurants and McArthur pools, close to Boardwalk complex, 4km to airport and 5 minutes away fro Humewood Golf Course (this historic course being the only true links course in S. Africa – the great Bobby Locke once remarked "that if the British opener had to b played outside of the British Isles –Humewood would be the ideal location!"). Apart from the many aquatic/marine activities (scuba diving, kite boarding, wind surfing, surfing, yachting, angling), there are various other activities available, all of which can be booked by the hotel, these include golf – city and township tours (Port Elizabeth was the landing place of the British settlers of 1820, as well as being at the crucible of the Anti Apartheid movement, so there are many significant historical sites), marine safari to the bird island group as well as day safaris to various game reserves including Addo, Schotia, Pumba, Kwantu & Amakhala (all within an easy 1 hr drive). Being close to the airport, The Windermere is the ideal starting or end point to the "Garden Route" and the ideal springboard to the Eastern Cape’s great game destinations. ... more   less
