“Very intimate Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2009

The Hacklewood is located in a private house in a living area not too far from the PE airport. It is more a homestay than a standard hotel. It's a place with a very personal touch, totally different from a standard hotel.

In the afternoon you may sit in the garden near the pool, relax and have some fantastic toasted sandwich and tea. In the morning breakfast (freshly cooked, no kept-warm buffet) is taken at the balcony.

Security isn't an issue.

The room has been huge but a bit old-fashioned. There were fruits, cookies and caramels offered for free - but not even a little bottle of water. Personally I didn't like the wooden floor in the bathroom too much. The rest was fine, except that they forgot the turn-down service (which you can expect at 5 star rating).

Prices were arount € 150,00 for a huge room with an even bigger bathroom.

I would rate the Hacklewood 3 - 4 stars.

Brilliant in all resepcts. A small hotel, full of antiques and character but all mod cons including massive bathrooms and wonderful food. The staff are so helpful and nothing is too much trouble. If you are going to or from Shamwari it is perfect.

When we arrived at the hotel the Manager himself came out and took our luggage. The friendly and personal service continued throughout our stay. The hotel is a Victorian house which has been beautifully converted into a hotel. The lounges are tasteful and comfortable. We stayed in the largest bedrooms, which were huge with equally large bathrooms. I looked at the other bedrooms and they were all very nice too. Unfortunately, we were so tired after our 3-day safari and journey from the Kruger that we didn't use the hotel restaurant, which I hear is very good. Will just have to go back.

A lovely old victorian hotel with old antique furniture, friendly staff and wonderful food! They pushed the boat out on Valentine's night to make my husband and I feel special with a lovely meal and great wine. The room was spacious, well equipped and with a very comfy four poster bed. We even had a four poster bath! The grounds are lovely and the area quiet but convenient for the airport and beach.

Absolutely stunning. Attention to detail is amazing in this historic home. Good location in Port Elizabeth. Staff is knowledgeable, extremely helpful and at your full disposal for any requests. We stayed one night here and it rained the whole day. We spent the afternoon in the cozy front sitting room having tea and cookies and chatting. We joined friends for dinner in the dining room for an outstanding meal. Would definately recommend staying here.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2007

After a very long haul flight from madrid to port elizabeth via johannesburg... this was perfect.

A quick, cheap taxi ride from the airport brought us to the leafy suburb of walmer. The accommodation is a luxurious manor house.... very large rooms... big bath with candles... huge shower... four poster bed... gorgeous big balcony - perfect for a glass of wine under the stars. Slightly dated decor in room, but you'd definitely forgive it.

The service was good... however, being a 5 star establishment, I thought it could be a bit slicker. (it felt a bit "family-run")

There is an AMAZING dinner every night which you should not miss. A 4 course meal, with great wine list... it was fabulous.

The location is not exactly in the hub of things.... however, it's perfect for a stopover, especially after a long flight. We certainly didn't feel like heading out for a night on the town. Pampering ourselves with a night of luxury here seemed like a far better option.
(Port elizabeth isn't exactly brimming over with luxury accommodation! So this was a pleasant surprise)

Oh, and one more thing... the breakfast - to die for!

  • Liked — The dinner...
  • Disliked — the service wasn't as slick as it could've been
