My partner booked me into the Conifer Beach House as we've stayed there before (in 2009). Granted it was a same-day booking but she booked two nights and when I arrived yesterday evening I was told I'd have to move 'around the corner' tonight ... something of an inconvenience which would have been nice to know about sooner or I'd have gone elsewhere. When I went to my room I found chip packets littering the ground - the excuse was that the gardener hadn't pitched (but why no one else took the trouble ...). The toilet seat was broken and the room wasn't clean. And the breakfast, which was spectacular the last time we visited, was a very cheesy (and not in a good way) omelette. As I'm being moved anyway I decided to stay elsewhere tonight.

The place is beautifully looked after (tastefully decorated, spotlessly clean) but we felt really well looked after. Our vegetarian special breakfasts were artistic creations and very tasty. Teresa the new manager went out of her way to ensure that we made the most of our time in Port Elizabeth, and booked us an excellent trip to the Red Location Museum and other sights with Calabash Tours. And finally - she drove us to the station herself to make sure we got off safely. I am so glad we chose the Conifer Beach House for our visit to PE.
The place is also in easy walking distance of a great many restaurants, with the Dolphins Leap Centre very close indeed and the Boardwalk Centre a beachfront stroll away.

The Conifer Beach House was wonderful. I am so happy that we decided to stay here. I travelled with my boyfriend and a bunch of friends. There were 11 of us. With a group this big we booked the entire property. From the moment we arrived we instantly felt welcomed and at home. We were very well-taken cared of. The moment we left, we missed it.

Alida, who runs the property is a gem! Breakfasts were prepared perfectly, excursions arranged, reservations for dinner made, and transportation to the airport in a pinch all contributed to a perfect stay.

The Conifer Beach House, while not on the beach is a short walking distance to the ocean and pier. It suited our needs perfectly.

We booked all the rooms and each room is a bit different from each other, all nice. The room we stayed in, which is seperate from the main house, has a kitchen and could easily fit three people with the sofa sleeper. There is an adjoining room that can fit another two people. There is another room, also seperate from the main house that is also very nice. The other 4 rooms that we booked are attached to the main house, but all have their own seperate entrances from the garden path around the home. All the rooms were lovely.

Room Tip: Inquire which room best fits your needs.

Lovely location, awesome cottages and incredible servicing, all in the vicinity of Port E beach. The cottages have a lovely kitchenette great for a tired family on the road for several days. Add to that the great recommendations from Muzz the much accomplished part time caretaker, and we almost wanted to call this place home. Of course the interconnected rooms helped as did the beautifully presented breakfast the next morning. Strongly recommend it over a sterile hotel stay specially if you want to truly experience South African hospitality.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2009

I stayed in room no.1 at the rear of the property and had easy off street secure parking, which is important in South Africa apparently, although I never experienced ANY problems whatsoever.
There is a lush garden surrounding the house which I think has 5 rooms /apartments.
A plunge pool in the front of house with sun chairs. I was there mid winter but think it would be very nice in summer.
All of the staff were friendly and breakfast was tasty and filling with choice of eggs sausages bacon toast etc etc .
My only complaint is,and this is for the whole of SA, is the coffee,no one seems to have espresso machines, so although it is fresh its not strong Italian style coffee.Anyway its a small thing compared to everything else.
The bed was comfy and warm in winter with 2 heaters in room with reverse cycle air conditioning.
Satelite tv was good for SA that is.
All in all a good place to stay in Humewood beach Port Elizabeth.
