“Unique, comfortable lodge and so many little details”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2010

We spent three nights here after having visited another luxury reserve. I loved the concept of the "tents" in rustic approach. Make no mistake though, they are very very comfortable and cozy. I loved the outside showers, the aromatherapy products, the candles, the hot bath ready for when you arrive from the game drives. So much attention to little details, very unique and inviting.
About the game drives I was well aware of the fact that the reserve is crossed by the N2 Highway and I did not care before but I realize now that it could be a bit distracting. Though our ranger was very enthusiastic, he was just not as experienced as the 18yr-career top notch ranger we had before.
In conclusion it was a fantastic experience. it felt authentic and unique. The Safari lodge is cozy and inviting and the staff super attentive and honesty warm and for those -so many- pluses would definitely recommend them.

Amakhala safari lodge was and incredible experience! we stayed for 3 night and 4 days and went on safaris all 4 of the days. Our safari guide Manoni was so fun and we were able to see everything! Lions, cheetahs, elephants, rinos, giraffes and a whole mess of other animals. Back at the lodge everything was 5 star quality and service. Our butler Andrew was so helpful and polite and always there for us!
If you are looking for a fantastic safari experience in south africa, look no further.

You are treated like a king from the moment you arrive. The suites are beautiful and overlook the bush with the possibility of animals (not dangerous ones thankfully) coming to drink in a watering hole within 20 metres of your suite.

We stayed for 4 nights and enjoyed the Tusker Package which gives you 6 game drives (one per day in the morning and late afternoon) but also gives you a visit to Addo Elephant Park and the Born Free Big Cat Foundation.

The game drives on the private reserve were awesome in themselves - we saw rhinos, giraffes, zebra, many different types of antelope, secretary birds, guinea fowl, ostriches, bushpigs, warthogs, water buffalo, wildebeest andmost amazingly LIONs and Cheetah (with her five cubs)....

The rangers were extremely informative and all of the drives were truly spectacular.

The visit to Addo was also amazing - we saw literally hunderds of elephants including a number of juniors and captured some truly amazing pictures. We also saw three lions just after they finished their 'lunch' which was also an amzing site.

The one negative was that we must have put on about half a stone whilst there as you seem to be constantly eating - whether its the coffee and muffins you get pre-game drive, the full continental and cooked breakfast whn you return from the morning drive, the beautiful buffet lunch at 2.00pm (with a wide variety of sweet and savoury food), the picnic of a variety of cheeses and nibbles whilst out on the afternoon drive or the four course prepared dinner at 8.00pm you certainly have no chance to get hungry!!!

Even with all of the above the main plus point from our trip was the staff.... the butlers (and especially our butler Casper) could not have done more for you, the masseur (who was put through her schooling and training by the lodge) was fantastic, the rangers were informative and helpful and the cleaning staff were extremely thorough!!!

Overall we'd recommend this holiday to anyone as it was a truly 5 start experience!!

From a warm welcome on our arrival, to the breathtaking views, our romantic suite, wonderful food, helpful butler Casper to the amazing game drives with Noni and Z , Safari Lodge at Amakhala was an awesome and unforgettable experience. Our stay at the lodge and service received exceeded our expectations. Ensure that gloves, scarf and "beanie" are part of your luggage when visiting during the colder months. These items will be useful on game drives.

We loved the fact that there is no cellphone reception and no TV. We are both very busy people, especially my partner so it was kinda nice to be away from everything and escape to a peaceful place where it was just us, the bush and the animals. The lodge is very beautiful and the staff very friendly. We were a bit dissapointed with the food though, it was not nice at all. Would love to visit in Summer and maybe I'll get to see a lion as I did not see one this time.

we stayed there for 2 nights and i must say that the service was out of this world.!!the staff are very welcoming and friendly! the food and the accomodation are of the best quality!!the services are very detailed as they take into account your preferences in terms of food and drink and accommodate for various diets.they go overboard to make sur eyou are comfortable! the safaris are great and the rangers are very experienced and very knowledgable in their field of work!everything about the lodge is wonderful and i would recommend it to anyone who is longing for a quiet getaway to admire the great wonders of nature :))
