“Fantastic experience !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

We have stayed at the Lodge on various occasions in the past and have spent a week during August this year relaxing at Bitou River Lodge. It always feel like home from home ! The Lodge is situated on the banks of the beautiful Bitou river, where birds are abundant and where you can rejuvenate body and soul. The rooms are luxurious and all have a river view. You are greeted by birds' songs at sunrise and the owls' call at night ensuring a memorable stay. Sue's sumptious breakfasts with home made scones, or muffins are to die for, not to forget her farm egg -omlettes ! Whilst you enjoy your meal, you have the priviledge to watch the Cape weavers building their nests on the water's edge. After a filling meal you may while away your time by taking a cano, rowing down the clear waters of the Bitou river as it is winding through lush vegetation on it's way to the sea. It is an unforgettable experience to approach birds, undisturbed by your presence and observe them at close range. Bitou River Lodge is situated within close proximity of the most beautiful beaches where dolphins can easily be spotted throughout the year as well as whales during the whaling season. The hosts Sue and Paul ensured that our stay was a memorable experience ! We highly recommend this venue. It is also mentionable that during certain times of the year this resort offers special tariffs, making it an affordable getaway where you can stay in style for less.

Room Tip: All rooms are river facing.

We were delighted when we arrived at Bitou River Lodge. It was everything we had hoped for and more. Stunning, tranquil. The room was light and airy, clean, comfortable and beautifully decorated in a French farmhouse style. Our hosts were fabulous, very welcoming and helpful. Sue excels in the kitchen and we appreciated her breakfast selection and surprises including delicious pancakes and unbelieveably good chocolate muffins. We enjoyed hiking in the nearby Tsitsikamma National Park and canoeing and bird watching along the river. We have fond memories of our stay at this outstanding guesthouse.

Me and my boyfriend went along the gardent route for 7 days and everynight was a new B&B. We were happy to get to Plettenberg bay but I was disappointed to see how it was so developped, particularly this horrible square hotel on the beach. What a relief when we arrived at Bitou River to see that part of Plett was still quaint and charming. Sue welcomed us warmly as she remembered my boyfriend's mother from her stay years ago, she then offered us coffee, tea and biscuits. She also recommended places to eat in the area and where to go to the beach. Along with a warm welcome, Bitou river is the perfect renovation of stables: the sort of things you see in magazine. But only done better... And it comes with a lot of lovely touches and attentions such as chocolates on your pilow and freshly made lemonade in your fridge. The breakfast was varied, with fresh ingredients and warm delights (pancakes that day) and it sets you off for a good day. Bitou river is together a peaceful location where one can relax by the river in a perfect setting (with a hamac, how lovely) and a location filled with fun as there is plenty to do : play cards or boardgames in the main living room (liquors are available for prolonged evenings), trampolining endlessly, canoeing along the river, take a dip in the pool and sunbathe. One night was too short for us, it is the best place to stay in Plett. Sue, we look forward to come visit you soon enought in Bitou River or on your next challenge.

We were delighted to introduce our friends to Sue and her superb accommodation, which has even improved since our last visit six years ago.The rooms are a delight; bright, very well equipped with no facilites lacking.
Breakfast is excellent, always with a different home made delight each day, such as delicious muffins.
There is now a marked walk around the property which is useful to stretch the legs and observe the bird life, and canoeing down the river on a peaceful afternoon takes some beating.
Sue is very good at advising trips out and arranging reastaurant bookings, and also at dealing with the unknown, such as our puncture.
I hope we can return, and would certainly strongly advise anyone to visit.

During our South Africa trip in September 2011 we had the privilege of staying at this lodge for 3 nights. There are so many positive things to say about this place that I hardly know how and where to start.

Sue is a great hostess and has so many great tips and advice about special places to go hiking, looking for birds, etc. The walk at Robberg is probably the most beautiful hike we have ever done (and we have done quite a few). Amazing views, seals, whales, birds, trees, sand, all in a single hike. Although not for the person who is afraid of heights, as the trail is sometimes very small, and the heights very high.

The rooms are very comfortably and decorated with great care. They also have a great view across the river. Many birds around, such as kingfishers, bishops and lots of weaver birds. Just hop in the canoe for some great exploring.

Breakfast is delicious and abundant, with a 'surprise' every morning: fresh muffins, eggs, fruit and so on.

We will always remember our 'goodbye greeting' from two blue cranes making a 'fly by' when we left.

Hopefully we have the opportunity to return here one day!

Sue is an excellent host. She makes a wonderful breakfast (still I'm remembering the delicious muffins). The rooms are very nice decorated and the boats is a "must do".
Walking around escorted by "Zinzi" is another "must".

A fantastic situation ideally placed along Garden Route for all attractions. Clean, light comfortable rooms in a stunning setting. Quiet but not far from Plet and amenities. Canoe along the river for fantastic birds and scenery. Sue was the perfect host. We have been to SA twice before from UK and this was the best Guest house yet. (Beds most comfortable anywhere). Will come back next year.
