“Three Day Safari at Pumba Private Game Reserve”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2012

We recently did a three-day safari here and what a treat it was. The animals we saw were numerous but amongst them were a white male lion (who was only 2ft. away from our jeep), the white lioness and her cub who took a warthog while we were watching them. Our ranger, Justin, said that in 4 years he has only seen this happen a handful of times, so we were very lucky.
During our trip we also saw a herd of giraffes, rhinos, elephants, impalas, buffalo, wildebeest, kudu, many birds including the most beautiful sunbird and lots of other too numerous to mention.
Our game drives were great fun and we enjoyed our 'sundowners' immensely. We originally thought this would be a one-off experience but I wouldn't be surprised if we go back there in the not too distant future.

Room Tip: We stayed at the Water Lodge which, in my opinion, was the best.

If you like bouncing around in the back of a landrover in wonderful scenery and seeing a dazzling array of animals ad bird or sitting by the lake as the sun goes down with a cold glass of Chablis then this is the spot for you.
This is a truly lovely place. The accommodation is superb, the restaurant is excellent and the staff are friendly, helpful and charming. A particular thanks from us to Peter our guide, and all the reception staff.
If you hand in laundry however make a list and check what comes back as items can go astray!!
Other than that everything was spot on. We are to return in October

Room Tip: Choose the water lodge. The lake made it for us.

This is a fantastic venue to explore the Big Five. At Pumba they look after all the details and treat you like a first class friend. We were pampered from start to finish during our stay. the staff were most helpful and even the smallest request received immediate attention. Our Ranger Pieter was very knowledgeable and went to great lengths to meet all of the requests we had to see certain species. When we arrived we were met with warm towels and a refreshing drink. This was their practice every time we returned from a game drive and it was a nice touch.
Our home was in a private thatched Boma with a huge King bed and a stand alone tub and a clear class showere as well as an outdoor shower. Our place faced out to the open bush so we could see animals at all time of the day. It also had a delightful plunge pool as well as a main pool facing the open veld as well.
One day lounging around the pool before lunch the manager Juri came to see us and offered to set up a private table for lunch under a shady arbour where we enjoyed shrimp tempura and copious amounts of crisp white South African wine! We were in heaven! Very private too!
After our evening meal there was turn down service and a flask of sherry to enjoy as a nitecap in our beautiful quarters. Our fridge was stocked with both beer and wine as well as any soft drinks and they also provided us with freshly squeezed jugs of orange juice as we required for getting rollin in the morning for early game drive.
We can't say enough about the attention to detail and their effort to meet our every need. The staff was not only extremely competent and professional but very friendly which we found to be the norm throuhout South Africa. We highly recommend this beautiful game reserve.

Room Tip: There is not a bad room altho ours was close to the main lodge which was convenient to go to and fro...

Location: in an elevated position looking down on a fairly large reservoir. Heavy bush leads down to the water, which is accessible via steps to a very good pontoon dock where you are able to fish. Pumba Game Reserve is about 105 KM north of Port Elizabeth on the N2 towards Grahamstown. Where you are leaving the city limits, note your milometer /KM reading and stay on this road until you see he sign for Alicedale off to the left, and follow signs to the Pumba Game Reserve. The sign is very small so do not overshoot. Pay attention for it. The road to the camp is a rough track for about 2-3 miles. Go slowly.

When you arrive, you will think you have fallen into heaven.

Description: the camp is rustic and quite sprawling. The cottage type rooms are all fairly close by and simply are luxurious. You are paying for this. Most if not all have a plunge pool which is very cold.

Facilities: aall you could wish for!!!

Food: Simply,......... very good!

Staff: very attentive, if not slightly too formal.

Game drives: slightly disappointing. Very organised and spot on,..but only a driver (no spotter perched on the front of the jeep) who must do everything. We did not see the Big Five, but did see white lions, elephants and so much more. I think if you came for the game viewing ONLY,..you may be disappointed. Having said that, our driver gave it his best shot and we had a good time. We did seem to do alot of driving to no avail.

Summary: a magnificent setting and would be hard to beat. They knew what they were doing when they built this place. Game viewing did not impress us.

Room Tip: Perhaps I would choose the Kruger for game viewing.

My wife and I went to Pumba Water Lodge a couple of weeks ago and actually signed up for TripAdvisor to review it. We arrived at Pumba after 27 hours of travel and were welcomed with a warm drink and a hot towel. They had arranged for the ranger to come back and pick us up so we could go on the afternoon game drive while they took care of the luggage. We're glad we did! We saw a family of Giraffes, Rhinos, Elephants, Monkeys, Zebras, etc... It was a great start to the trip and indicative of the top flight customer service you get at Pumba.

Everything was responded to with "yes sir" or "yes ma'am" ; the staff could not have been nicer or more helpful. The food was well prepared, a choice of a different type of game each evening along with options for those who weren't as adventurous. They had a nice selection of South African wines and a full bar to boot.

The rooms at the Msenge Lodge are a bit more modern looking with glass walls, but we preferred the Water Lodge with the views of the lake from the lodge. Highly recommend having lunch at the one you do not stay at, if they have the time the staff is willing to drive you. All the rooms at the Water Lodge come with a large private deck, plunge pool, & deck chairs. The balconies are truly private, no bungalow can see another bungalow's balcony. The room was well appointed and actually close to the size of our Manhattan apartment.

We were with Gladman for all of our games drives and he was a great ranger, he knew the wildlife and was adept at getting us to some great scenes, especially the white lioness and her cub making a breakfast out of a warthog on a morning game drive.

We stayed for 3 nights and that does give you a good opportunity to seek our the animals. 6 game drives is perfect, would not recommend doing less than that, the game reserve is large at 6,000 hectares and takes a while to get around so you need time to find some of the more elusive wildlife. We would absolutely recommend this place and cannot wait to return!

We had the most wonderful time here. The game drives, views, rooms, food and staff could not be faulted. I hope we can afford to come back some day!
