“Nothing to Merit South African Tourist Board's 4-star Rating”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2013

What a disappointment. We found ourselves stranded in East London when our South Africa coastal trip was cancelled by a horrendous storm, and relied on a guidebook recommendation to quickly find a respite from the rain. It boasts its 4-star rating at the front desk, but any basis for that rating is nowhere to be found in either the accommodations or the staff. It has a picturesque setting overlooking the river, but all of the one-bedroom rooms have a view of only a garden. The rooms are worn out—lots of water spots on the ceiling from inadequate roofing and water runoff, empty refrigerators that look dingy in their cabinet, no safe in the rooms, and generally the feel of a tired hotel.
A sign at the front desk says that renovation is underway, but it won’t cure the biggest problem—poor service and attitude. When we checked in, there was none of the smiles and warmth we encountered in each of the other accommodations during our 2-week trip to South Africa. No orientation, no information about meal times, no booklet in the room with information about the hotel, area, etc. Any information we wanted we had to ask directly.
Food service was no better. The food itself was unimaginative, and the service was slow. The entire wait staff performed as if they were trainees with no sense of confidence. Their understanding of English was poor, resulting in not bringing the correct food as ordered.
In short, no one seemed to want to be working there, let along enjoying working there.

I stayed at this hotel as a last minute decision, and was charged R1045 for a single room without breakfast.

The room was standard, but not of a high quality (cupboard doors didn't close, cheap finishes in bathroom etc). There were a few things missing too - like anywhere to plug in my phone to charge (means you have a choice of charging & fridge, or charging & tv!). The bedside light didn't work, and the rooms are VERY poorly sound insulated.

Having frequented the hotel bar (The Highlander) many times as resident in East London, I was well aware of the noise that would come from the bar on a friday night. I was given a room far away from the bar on request, but the guests in the room above me were clearly having a party of their own and I had get someone to ask them to quieten down after midnight. This is not the hotels fault - but better sound insulation in the rooms would have gone a long way to avoiding the annoyance.

Overall this is an average hotel - but very overpriced for what they offer. Their family suites (with views over the river), are much better value, as they are fully self catering and have beautiful views. My room on the other hand simply looked out into bush.

This hotel should review their pricing structures based on the different types of accomodation they offer (ie, charge more for a sea view, but then also charge less for the lower standard rooms).

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the river, otherwise you may be stuck in a dune. Also if you want pea...

Stayed for a long weekend in late summer, with a family of 4 in a two-bedroomed suite.

Receptionists were helpful, bar/restaurant was friendly and confortable, the pool area is pretty.
But the real treat was the rooms!
Clean, well laid-out and featuring balconies that overlook the river and beach... wow!
There are few better places on this planet to watch the sun set. Or rise over the sea, should you wake early enough.

The kitchen was well appointed for self-catering, but we ordered room service for dinner. And it was astoundingly good!(Chicken schnitzel with mushroom sauce, grilled veggies and chips - we ALL ordered it again the next night)

Really nothing to fault at all. Plenty of secure parking, lovely pathways down to the river and beach, it was heaven.

Can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor room facing the lagoon, to get the best view - we were in C-block, which was per...

I really love this hotel, it was such a pity that this time they put me in a room facing the lagoon but on the ground floor so my view was a little obscured by the overgrown bush in front of my room. I found the lady in reception a little rude which surprised me as I have stayed there before and they went out of their way to accomodate me.
I will be returning shortly and this time I hope they get my requirements correct. I took a client out for dinner in the restuarant and it was excellent as usual!

Room Tip: Choose a room with a sea and laggon view on top floor

I was on business for 2 weeks in EL and stayed in the Blue Lagoon. For the price it is not more than average. The food in the restaurant and bar is very good. The prices in the bar are ok and the rooms are ok. But the service is not acceptable. The staff which I met was mostly unfriendly and not able to call me a cab or the airport shuttle. 2 times they forgot it and had to order it when I wanted to leave. The same with the wake-up-calls...They just forget to do it.

Next time in EL i would choose another hotel.

Spent a night and never again. From the quoted price over the phone, price doubled next day when checking out. Not only that, we were a group of 6 people who could easily have fitted into one suite (which has plenty of space and enough beds) but were told to take two units.
Veyr basic and old fashiioned - could do with some renovation but had the basics in the self-catering kitchen.
Did not get any sleep that night due to cars parked below next to the lagoon with music blaring full blast as well as the music from their bar.
Front desk staff not interested in complaints of price difference - was quite rude in fact.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a quotation in writing before you get horribly ripped off.

This little gem is worth a visit. I have just spent a week there while on a business trip to East London, it is very central and made getting to my appointments very easy. My room had the most spectacular view, the service was very good especially by the evening staff in the restaurant.
I had a large screen TV in my room with a good selection of channels, but somehow I never got to view much TV as I loved every moment of sitting on the balcony enjoying the most beautiful sunsets while watching all the activity on the beach and on the river.

I highly recommend the Blue Lagoon Hotel and will be returning for another week very soon.

Room Tip: Try and book a room with a river and sea view.
