We have just returned home after three super weeks in South Africa. One of the highlights of the holiday we must share with fellow Trippers is our stay at the Royal Guest House in Port Alfred. We found this guest house on the internet and like others tend to accept some of the descriptions owners provide with a pinch of salt.
But the Royal lived up to all the descriptions and our expectations. Everything about the place was splendid, from the rooms (we chose Room 5 with a great view over the river at Port Alfred), to the breakfasts (great choice), to the honesty bar and to the pool. But the best part was the staff of the guest house - from the manager (Meagan) who had her finger on every button (everything was just as you would want it to be), to Michael who watched over visitor’s cars overnight and to the lovely African girls who generally looked after us. And the prices are reasonable too – given the quality of service and facilities provided.
If you want a great place for a few days off the beaten track in SA - Port Alfred might fit the bill and the Royal provide the place to rest a weary head. The sea and beach are wonderful and local places to visit offer all sorts of experiences. In town you must eat at Butlers, overlooking the river. And, don’t miss the nearby town of Bathurst. It has the oldest pub in South Africa and the best agricultural museum we have ever seen, including the first caravan! Alan, the guy in charge, is wonderful and can explain how everything works – and prove that nothing is new!
