Just made the trip to the Skywalk and have to say it was an amazing experience. We drove from the south rim straight to the west rim. It took us about 4 hrs to get there. For those who say GPS doesnt take you is wrong! Our GPS got us there fine. AAA has valid directions as well. Coming from the South RIM, Stockton hill road was isolated, so that was a little nerve wrecking. Make sure you have a full tank and plenty of water. You will not see a gas station at all. Also in June, it was extremely hot!!!We did get a little nervous as there were no cars in sight for miles, but it gets better on Pierce Ferry Road. You will start seeing tour buses and cars. There is about 16 miles of unpaved roads that come your way. Yes that is annoying and it does slow you down, but once you see the West RIM sign it gets back to normal roads.
Once you get to the visitor center you are forced to take a tour to 3 other spots before you buy a ticket to the skywalk. That is why I would not give this a 5 star. The ticket was about $80 per person. Ppl over 55 get a discount. I thought the ppl there were extremely helpful. I was traveling with my mother who has difficulty walking. They offered a wheelchair on and off the buses which was a life savor! For free! Made the trip so much easier for us.
The views at each stop - breath taking. Worth the drive in my opinion. After seeing the South rim which is beautiful as well, the west rim is a completely different experience.
The skywalk - it was small. I admit that was a little let down. I was expecting something larger and spectacular. Also the glass is frosted glass, the middle having one thin strip that you can see through. Regardless it was a great view and feel. You do have to pay for the pic, which is $30. A rip off. But if you are planning to make this trip, it will cost you a bit.
We headed back to vegas around 5pm. On your ride back you do get to see tons of cattle. The ride to vegas was not bad at all.
Overall - great experience, would do it again in a heartbeat.
