“Good for the $, but two things...”

All in all, a good value for the money - convenient to freeway (2 blocks) yet quiet, room comfortable (but not fancy), older heating and cooling unit adequate but louder than newer equipment might be. Just watch out for two things - eat at the Arizona Family Restaurant back by the freeway (2 blocks), not at the hotel; and make sure you take all your personal belongings when you leave.

We noted other reviewers commented on restaurant, and we couldn't agree more: eat somewhere else. Restaurant operation is contracted out, and definitely shows. The night we checked in it had already closed, then at breakfast various items on the menu couldn't be served because the kitchen was waiting for deliveries. How many restaurants let breakfast inventory get so low that they can't serve roughly a quarter of their breakfast menu, including milk and fruit, without a morning delivery (which still hadn't arrived by 9 a.m.)? When we told our friends who had recommended the hotel, they said, "Oh, sorry, we forgot to tell you - eat at Arizona Family Restaurant. It's right back by the freeway (2 blocks) and run by a family which really cares about its food and its service. It's the best place in town." Yes, indeed!

Only other problem was we left a personal item in the room, which we noticed when we unpacked in a different city that night,. We immediately called Best Western Green Valley, and the desk clerk put us on hold to check 'lost and found.' Our item was quickly found, and we were promised it would be mailed to us at home. When we arrived home two weeks later, however, there was no package. We then called management, and they went out of their way to purchase and send us an identical replacement.

Would we stay here again? Absolutely...so long as the Arizona Family Restaurant is still there!

Next to a small mall so restaurants and a few shops are convenient. However, had to show clerk my printed confirmation in order to get the rate I booked. Found personal items from former guests under the bed and in the nightstand. Skip the hotel restaurant and eat at the deli in the strip center next door.

I would not stay at this hotel again. My family and I stayed here because of its proximity to my mother's house (lots of out-of-town guests + small house = hotel). and I was extremely disapointed. I've stayed there before and it wasn't bad but this time was terrible. The entire hotel was not cooled so it was HOT. The hallways, the lobby, the restaurant, our room ... all were hot. Even after turning on the in-room A/C, our room never did cool adequately. The room also stank and was not clean. The hallways were dim, dirty, and stinky. Our bed was so soft that one small twitch from either my husband or I would cause it to shake. At $80/night, I would expect much better.

We stayed at this Best Western for two nights during a birding excursion to SE Arizona. We chose Green Valley for its proximity to Madera Canyon (we booked too late to get lodging at one of the establishments in the canyon). The door to our room had been slammed so many times the jamb was loose. The hallways were darkly lit. Cleanliness was OK, the room was quiet (there were quite few guests staying at the hotel at the time). We wanted an early breakfast before going out birding, but there was no buffet, only a sit-down breakfast at an associated in-house restaurant. The town itself seems a bizarre place, all retirees and housing developments -- it seems as though there are more golf courses than restaurants.

“Lots of Pluses and One Huge Minus”

Best Western Green Valley

Aug 10, 2006
5/5 found this review helpful

If my wife and I were to rate the Best Western in Green Valley for only our room and the adjoining accommodations, I suspect that we would give it a five-star review. Though the motel is slightly off the "beaten path" (as opposed to all the other hotels/motels in the area which are located adjacent to the I-19 freeway), it is, as others have said, in a quiet neighborhood and thus quite pleasant.

The rooms were excellent, the indoor decor appealing, and the front-desk staff always pleasant (though one young male worker did not know much about the area and to a simple question about directions suggested that we talk to some "old time resident" if we wanted to know our "how to go" answer. He did not, however, suggest where we might find one of these persons). Neither of us are swimmers but the pool looked inviting and welcoming on a hot afternoon of outdoor activities.

The motel fails, however, in one striking way: For whatever reason, the owners have, rather miserably, decided to allow a non-affiliated restaurant to serve as the only place for its guests to get a much-needed breakfast in the morning. We expected to have to go out in the evenings, and we did, but we were floored to find that it was impossible to even find a piece of toast or a glass of orange juice unless one were will to pay up to $8.50 or more for it at what purports to be a French-chef-run locale. The result was that we found ourselves during the three days that we stayed at the Best Western driving each morning to the local McDonalds about a mile or so away to grab something filling.

Another reviewer has already noted that nearly every Best Western in the country now serves some kind of complimentary breakfast. Some are, of course, better than others, but this must be the only member of the chain in the United States that consciously chooses to offer absolutely nothing. That fact would have to rate them a "Zero" if that low a score was possible. So would we stay there again? Probably not. The rooms costs were as high or higher than a comparable room in Tucson and, as a result, I think we would opt for the newer Baymont or somewhere else where it wasn't necessary to get dressed to go eat in the mornings.
