Wow! What an opulent time must have created the Gadsden Hotel back in the 1920s. The marble columns and marble staricase with the gold filigree tops to the columns are so amazing. One can stand in the lobby and see a unique and beautiful stained glass wall at the top of the marble staircase depicting the unique Chiricaua Mountain range of SE Arizona and an example of the wildcats of the area shot by the hotel host herself. Rooms are 1920's style with crisp clean linens and comfortable beds. Our hostess, Robyn Breyhus, told us delightful stories of the ghosts of Pancho Villa and other guests of the hotel in days past. You can feel their presence in the hallways and rooms still today. Great visit!

So, we've driven hours from Phoenix through the hot dusty desert. Finally, we arrive in Douglas looking forward to down time in "beautiful, historic" Gadsden hotel. Sure, the lobby is ornate old western - one might expect the ghost of May West to drift down the central staircase. That's the first two minutes. It's all down hill after we check in.

Long story made simple - bugs in tub, bugs in bed, dust an inch deep on everything. This place beats The Shining for creepiness, but, it's not the ghosts that will get ya.

Oh, and the elevator operator goes off duty at 8:00pm. So, if you get the urge to run screaming from the building in the middle of the night forget it... you're trapped till dawn!

Other reviewers have commented adversely on cleanliness and upkeep. Our room was clean, quiet and adequate but rather shabby, but in fact better than we had expected from some other reviews. Dinner and breakfast in the atmospheric restaurant and coffee shop were good and reasonable value although the kitchen operation perhaps needs to be a bit smarter. The lobby and manually operated elevator are experiences in themselves. The location would be good if the city authorities could actually breathe some life into the decayed downtown. Overall, it's a place to stay if you want something different from the usual bland resorts or functional motels.

What a fantastic experience. Stepping into that lobby was like stepping back a century in time. The grandeur was awesome beyond our expectations. Our kingsize room was sparce but comfortable. The bed was firm but the large pillows were perfect. The staff was young, well groomed, professional and courteous. We ate dinner in the dining room and breakfast in the coffee shop. Excellent food and great prices. Highly recommend

I use the Arizona State Goverment rates. This hotel only offers a full size bed in the smallest room posible. That would have been ok except the room was very dirty. The lavatory in the bathroom was hanging on the wall by one corner, the cold water faucet was not secured to the lavatory so when you tried to turn it on the whole faucet turned, There was no heat, The ceilling light in the room did not work, Their was black mold all around the bathtub, The carpet, baseboards, and tile foor was filthy. The room did have a television but the remote did not work. There was a microwave and a small frig but I'm not sure they even worked. The lobby, stained glass and paintings would have been pretty if they were cleaned and dusted from time to time. The managment is more impressed by the history of the old place more than caring for it and preserving it. They seem to only want the money. I had reserved 2 nights I stayed 1 and I regret it. I was charged over $59.00 and if I would have known what it was I would not pay $20.00 Other more expensive rooms may have been better but I would not take that chance.

  • Liked — history of the old motel
  • Disliked — needs to be upgraded, remodeled or torn down. Probably a health hazard
