We had visited this area many times in the past and also camped in Deadhorse Ranch State Park. Kind of a little-known place, but really a great camping spot. Fishing, too, and a very interesting ruin, Tuzigoot National Monument, nearby. We found Old Town Cottonwood has really come back to life and has good restaurants, an excellent hotel, along with many interesting shops. Not far from the ghost town of Jerome, as well as Sedona and Flagstaff. Overall, just a good area to spend some time in, and a short drive from Phoenix. We usually take the more scenic route and go through Wickenburg from Phoenix, then highway 89 to Prescott. It's a nice drive, and Prescott is always fun to visit. On the way home we get on Interstate 17 and often make a stop in Rock Springs for a super piece of pie. The whole thing can easily be done in a day.
