“Better than you'd expect”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

Having stayed at a number of Crowne Plazas that were gussied-up Holiday Inns, this one comes as a pleasant surprise. The property is spread out over multiple interconnected buildings next to the golf course. I can't comment on the golfing, as I'm not a golfer, but the property is well-maintained looks nice. The lobby is large and comfortable, and that describes the rooms as well: they're larger than you might expect, well-furnished, and very comfortable. Bathrooms are large, and this is the only place you can really tell this is a Holiday Inn property, because the soaps and shampoo and such aren't packaged or presented the way that they are in higher-priced hotels.

The service is excellent. I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. One particular pleasant surprise was the restaurant--the food and service is much better than the prices would lead you to expect.

The location is great if you need to be in the Chandler area. It's walking distance to shopping and a large number of restaurants.

Overall I was favorably impressed.

“It's really better than average but not quite to very good”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2013

An attractive old property conveniently located in Chandler, AZ near restaurants. We'd made a reservation via Priceline and check in was a breeze with a large king bed room awaiting us with a patio open to a courtyard. All was clean, quiet once the housekeepers were done for the day (their service room was nearby) and everything worked as it should with the exception of a slow bathtub drain but is there any other kind these days at hotels? Lanscaping in the courtyards is easy on the eyes. We did not stay long enough to investigate the grounds further but I would like to since it is a golf resort and opens to some lovely views. I would stay again and recommend to others.

“Review is an all over the charts property!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2013

My daughter & I arrived late (11:30 PM, after a 7 hr drive from LA) & were checked in (as I called at noon to say we'd be arriving after 11P). 2 others at the desk didn't have rooms that their reservation could honor). We got to our room to find out it was filthy & not cleaned from the prior guests. Front desk unable to move us as no other rooms. So we waited about 15 mins for housekeeping who only brought the cleaning cart...no linens. The very pleasant housekeeper said: "Do you want clean linens?" Really??!!?? No, those dirty, rumpled ones are fine....not!! No vacuuming, no scrubbing of bathroom. Ewwwww!! I replaced the empty Kleenex box that apparently the prior guests took (as no box in garbage) while he went for clean sheets. The room walls are paper thin & a noisy family beside us kept us awake our second night. Hotel room doors closing echo throughout the area. The hotel property, pool area & outside tented event areas were all clean looking & well manicured. Hotel staff were pleasant. I just question the overall room cleanliness of all of their guest rooms & how they are cleaned when rooms change over!!! They credited the first night, which was appreciated, but that doesn't make up for the ewwww factor & lack of sleep. I'd hate to see what non-Priority Club guests receive!

“The staff made our stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

We just returned from a week long stay at The San Marcos. The thing that stands out about was best about our stay was the service. From the moment we called to book our room, until AFTER checking out we have received great service. We were welcomed by Brett, the Bellhop who went above and beyond for us. He not only helped with our bags, shuttled us, (via the FREE shuttle service they offer for places within 5 minutes of the hotel) but he assisted us in finding places, getting cabs, etc. The location was perfect for us, as I was attending a seminar near by. There wear countless GOOD restaurants and shops within walking distance of the Resort. We were also pleased with the restaraunt/bar in the resort. The food was great the couple of times we ate there and the prices were much more reasonable than most hotels, especially for Room service. Again, we had fantastic service by a young man named Justin who took care of our room service orders when we were there. The resort is in need of a few upgrades, new t.v.s, some new furniture to replace the sofa sleepers in the rooms, and a few basic maintenance things that could be addressed (shower heads need replaced or tightened, drains need cleaned) but it is my understanding that all of those things are being addressed and there are some great changes ahead for the San Marco. (Even if none of those issues were addressed, it would still be a great place to stay and a good value.)The history of the place is something you should be sure to check out, we will certainly be back next year. Our thanks to Shawn, Brett, Justin, and all of the staff that helped make our stay such a fantastic one!

Room Tip: Ask for a room closer to the lobby if you don't want to walk a long way. Use the stairs! The ele...

“Pro's outweigh the Con's”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2013

I just returned from a business stay at this hotel. The hotel is charming and lots of history here. We had one of the wait staff tell us some of the stories of it's past. The staff here are friendly and accomodating. The restaurants are reasonably priced, and the food and service were very good.
The fact that there are so many other restaurants (and shops) within walking distance made this a great place to stay. The rooms are comfortable and quiet. The location was perfect for my business needs.
There are a couple of negatives. First, the elevator was out in the West end while I was there. It did not get repaired during my entire stay of 4 days. I'm not sure who they contract with for elevator service, but 4 days without repair to me says 'find a new vendor'. There are three floors, and lugging your suitcase up and down the stairs was difficult.
The other negative is the heating and cooling system in the rooms. It's loud, and it's sporatic. While I was there last week, Arizona had an unprecedented cold snap. There were many guests, including one of my collegues, who complained about having no heat. When the system did come on, it kicked on and off continously, and the noise level was high.
Finally, the rooms felt dated to me. Carpet and furniture was older, and they still have tube tv's.
In summary, the 'pros' of this hotel outweigh the 'cons', and I will definitely stay here again when in the Chandler area.

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the lobby. The rooms at the West end are a bit of a hike to get to the pool and...
