My 9 year old son and I just returned from a long weekend in Phoenix. As a lover of the desert and with the goal of providing him with an adventurous experience while there, I began researching options for activities outside of what you would normally do (i.e. swimming pool, etc). I came across Windwalker Expeditions, who provide private desert adventures through horseback, jeep or photography tours. One comment mentioned that this is "not your typical nose-to-tail horseback ride"...that was exactly what I was searching for! When I called to inquire, I was asked for our desired length of ride (we chose 2.5 hours), and the experience levels of the riders. Since my brother and sister-in-law were joining us, our group of 4 had varied riding expertise. "No problem" as the guides are experienced instructors and can help as needed. Your payment information is collected at the time of reservation although it will not be processed until a few days before the event. I called a couple more times to get directions, ask questions, etc. and each time the staff were very friendly and helpful. The day finally arrived for our "sunset ride". At this slight increase in elevation, the heat of the intense sun was lessened and cool breeze made it very comfortable. Our guide, Jeff, was the BEST. Each saddle was equipped with a saddle bag which held cold water bottles and gave us a place to put our jackets and cameras. As we started our ride, Jeff engaged my son in conversation. His banter with a real "cowboy" broke the ice right away. He truly wanted to make it fun and gave us several choices as to which way we wanted to go. The horses were not the typical rental rides that follow nose to tail, on a well-beaten path, waiting for the opportunity to hurry back to the trailer. They were healthy, happy and well cared for. We could ride side by side, trotting or cantering as the conditions and our comfort allowed. Jeff was always aware of the situation and I felt comfortable that my son would not be in any unsafe situation. One misconception is that the desert is sandy with no living plant life. It was absolutely beautiful! Saguaro cactus, trees, streams and even a waterfall were part of the panorama. We went up hills, through the running streams and rock formations. It was truly the "western" adventure we were hoping for. Before we knew it, it was time to return to our starting point. We watched the sun set as we drove away. So wonderful! We will definitely return and plan to go for a longer ride deeper into the desert and hills. Thank you Jeff and Windwalker Expeditions!
