“No Perks at this resort!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012 via mobile

We have stayed at many hotels ranging from the Maui Four Seasons to humble privately owned motels. We are well travelled but not snobs at all. We have no problem carrying our own luggage, getting ice on our own, etc. This resort charges resort prices but fails to deliver. As previous reviews state there is no early check in at this hotel. They say they will call you when your room is ready. We asked if we could wait at the pool. We were told yes but we have no place for you to change. No hospitality suite. We changed in the bathrooms near the hotel lobby. No offer to store our luggage. Back in car it went. We then made our way to what appeared to be the closest pool entrance from the lobby. Locked. Made our way back up towards the lobby and across to the far side of the pool. Once in we looked for the pool attendant. None! Towel caddy? None! We then asked one of the two bar attendants where we could obtain pool towels. In a snotty tone she said "they are found in your room so obviously we don't have any". When we told her we were waiting for our room and were granted permission to use the pool she snickered. We then asked where we could get pool towels. She said "at the front desk" Really?? Where we just came from. No offer from her to retrieve them (i would have tipped her and told her such had she offered) and they were not provided by front desk staff when we initially expressed our desire to use the pool. Unreal!! No shade at pool. Three umbrellas hoarded by those who most likely staked things out early morning. Now the pool has a bar with two attendants, but be prepared to retrieve your own drinks. Also no food available poolside except hamburgers, hotdogs and chips. At a resort? Really? We were then overcharged for our final round of drinks. We had to go inside to the main bar to sort things out. The two attendants somewhat ganged up on me even though I had my credit info up on my cell phone. I sorted it out with another bartender who apppeared far more experienced. Now after I reserved our room one month prior. I was emailed a certificate for a free room upgrade. The instruction stated show at check in for upgrade. We did. Clerk sat it aside.and said nothing. Know your reservation and the classes of rooms available as where they initially placed us was not an upgrade at all, nor was second room. Requested upper floor...first room was not. Second and third rooms were second floor only upon me insisting. Request for robes and extra pillows were never accomodated. Once in room it was dark, clean, nice pool view, no mini bar, one regular coffee pack, no room safe and room was very warm. Turned down ac. We were in hurry to meet friends for dinner. We quickly showered and left for dinner hoping for a cooler room upon our return Returned 6 hours later and the room had only cooled by two degrees. Called front desk. Maintenance showed up 40 minutes later. Could explain nothing. Said he wasn't sure what problem was since no one else had complained. He would check a few things and go from there. Never saw him again. Finally room no cooler, we gave up and went to bed. Sleep was miserable that night. Totally dismayed by this premium room. Wasn't worth the basic room rate of $92.00 paid. Would hate to see what a basic room was like. Upon checking out the next morning we mentioned the malfunctioning ac and the miserable night sleep we had. No offer of compensation. Only "aaahhhh that's to bad!" Needless to say we will never stay here again. Its a shame. We have many friends in the area and often attend events. We will return to staying at The Boulders. A little farther away but well worth it due to customer service and resort amenities. This would never happen at the Boulders and the several bed and breakfast in the area. All of who will have a future business. Carefree will not and since no compensation was offered for our miserable night we will not be giving Carefree Resort a second chance. Had they we most likely would have.

Bought a weekend package through Groupon. We met our adult children there. They arrived super early and they checked them right in. We arrived 2 hours later, still early and they checked us right in. Staff could not have been nicer or more accomodating. Clean, beautiful grounds. We would stay there again. Breakfast was superb as well.

This was a weekend stay-cation. I was disappointed that the hot tub wasn't working and a little worried that this was a sign of deferred maintenance. However, the rest of the property was beautiful and well maintained. I felt the restaurant and drink prices more than fair. Really enjoyed the prime rib special on Saturday Night. Staff were friendly and professional. Would return again.

Room Tip: Pay the little extra and get the rooms near the pool. Rooms are quite large and the views excellent...

We spent two nights at the carefree resort for a mini stay-cation. There was a deal going on so we figured we'd check it out. We stayed in a one bedroom Sonoran suite. It is newly renovated and decorated and pretty spacious. It had two patios with mountain views. We did not use the patios as there was a hornets nest under the ceiling of one of them!! The food at the resort was decent and the poolside and room service were both excellent. My main complaint with this property is the pool. There is absolutely no shade by the pool. Seriously, no trees, no umbrellas. Well, one dinky umbrella at a single table was all there was. If you are going to call yourself a resort in Arizona, you need to have a better shade situation going on at your pool! It was really absurd. Laughable really, except we were really hot with the sun incessantly beating down on us, despite being in the pool, so we didn't really feel like laughing. Also we asked the front desk for pool towels. They gave us 3- all they had. We are a family of 5. Again, you're a resort- with a pool- you need some towels. The patio furniture was also really old. I don't know about you, but I don't like sitting on dirty chairs with rips in them by the pool ( or anywhere else for that matter). So, if they improved the pool situation drastically this could be a decent little getaway. Otherwise, I think I'll try the boulders hotel if we go to carefree again.

I knew the "resort" would not be high end but the price was good and we planned other activities (food, spa, and balloon ride) to fill out our schedule. I wasn't that disappointed with the property but it could have been updated with better materials. The bottom line is that they are not making LOTS of money like other high end resorts so they don't have same resources to really update the property. The only downside during our stay was the spa experience. If you want a spa experience do it at another resort (probably one that starts with the letter "B"). We both scheduled massages, and mine with Myrna was good but my girlfriends experience with the spa and Lynn put a damper on that afternoon (no robes, lack of coordination, not experienced, cell phones, etc.) I was also not impressed with the concierge service. I called several times before our visit with no answer and left a message. It was the Monday AFTER we departed when I received a call back! The resort touts the concierge service in the confirmation email, but she/he was non-existant. When she finally called I mentioned the spa experience and she responded with "well, hope it's better next time". It's not a high end place nor will it ever be. If you are looking for accommodations in Carefree and have planned activities away from the resort, you will be fine. Just make sure you figure those things out before you get there. ...shout out to Branko (waiter); courteous and attentive.

Room Tip: Selected mountain views rather than the pool and it was quieter.

Ate at the Lariat Restaurant inside the resort. Happy hour was great with moderate prices & well drinks. Four of us at the restaurant for dinner. Service was fine and the food had mixed reviews.
The rainbow trout dinner was a definite 4, The chicken sandwich special would be rated a 4, the Black Angus hamburger was a 2.5 ---- medium was the request but came out well done -- should have sent it back but didn't -my fault. The Ahi tuna sandwich was average - a 3. All ratings out of 5.
We would go back again as the meals were a good value but if the food wasn't as requested we will send it back.

Room Tip: Send the food back if not done to your taste. Hate to give this resort this type of a review and wi...

My best girlfriend and I stayed here a couple weeks ago in a two queen standard room. It was great relaxing by the pool, although I wish they had more shade (other than table umbrellas). The staff accommodated our requests quickly. I had to request that my bedding be changed when I discovered it was covered in some kind of black hair, I am guessing from a cat or dog? Anyway they changed it all and it was fine. The room was very large and had a nice flat screen. The hotel does show its age, but it is maintained well. Our balcony looked over the pool area and was a great place to relax in the evening. We had pool side lunch and dinner at the restaurant on separate days and both times it was excellent. I would definitely recommend it for a nice little getaway, but be warned it is a 20 minute drive into the Phoenix area so if that is your aim then this might not be the place for you. The little town offers everything you need in the way of restaurants and cafes, grocery stores, touristy shopping, etc.
