“OK Stay”

Cameron Trading Post Grand Canyon Hotel

Apr 28, 2008

Stayed overnight here before visiting the Grand Canyon - its in a really convenient position for entering the park by the East entrance. When we first went in our room there was an overpowering smell of air freshener that was way too strong, but the room was large and quiet and the beds were comfy. Having a double vanity unit in the room was useful though the shower room itself was tiny. A fridge in the room would have been useful as we had picnic food and water with us from our lunchtime walk that we had wanted to keep. The gardens in front of our room were pretty and the gift shop is good (especially with a 10% discount voucher). The restaurant was in a fantastic old room decorated with native american crafts and the food was good too - a smile from any of the waiting staff would have made our stay even better!

Good deal. Not deluxe, but more than adequate for two adults and two teens. Surprisingly nice room in complex next to huge, tacky souvenir shop. (Actually, shop wasn't that bad-the words 'tacky' and 'souvenir' just seem to go together.) Room was quite comfortable with two double beds. Restaurant was predictably mediocre, but it's the only show in town as far as I know. We had breakfast at a nearby grocery store which had a small sit-down area. Bought cereal, milk, pastries and coffee and it was just fine for us.

This excellent, aesthetically pleasing hotel is a great base from which to tour the south rim of the Grand Canyon (GC). It is located about 35 miles east of the entrance to GCNP. It’s about 60 miles from GC village. Takes roughly 90 minutes to drive to the GC village from the hotel (assuming minimal delays at the GC entrance gate, and little traffic congestion in the park), and it is scenic the whole way. An aside, the eastern GC overlooks are IMO better than the western overlooks.

Rooms at the hotel vary in size and bed number/size/configuration. We called and were able to specify a reservation for a room that was a bit bigger than the average room (it was located at a “bend” in the hotel). Bed was super comfortable, the room very clean, in excellent condition, and the décor was outstanding, done in a colorful, pleasing Indian motif.

Carpeting in room was clean but worn. The hotel has no elevators, so if you get a room on the upper floors, you will be dealing with stairs. Another mild negative point, no weather channel available on TV, surprising considering travelers are always interested in the weather.

Hotel is located on Indian land, you cannot buy alcohol at the hotel or anywhere else in town, so if you want something, bring it with you.

An almost overwhelming in a good way gift shop, excellent restaurant, large portions at a reasonable price, beef choices the best bet (if you eat and like meat, of course). One night there was a major line up to get into the restaurant, note that you can get food to go, and eat in your room. They have a very nice central garden area (fragrant herbs), and you can walk 50 yards and take in the snake river canyon, or watch the sun set over the GC.

Cameron is a nothing town. The hotel, a modest grocery store, a post office and 2 gas stations are the highlights. In fact, there really is no town, which was fine with me, the resulting evening hush was conducive to excellent sleep.

The elevation of Cameron is roughly 3000 feet lower than the Grand Canyon (Cameron is at about 4000 feet, versus the highest points in GC being over 7000 feet), which can help if you feel the affects of being at high altitude. Travel tip, bring saline spray for your nose (high altitude and desert dryness in combination are very hard on your nasal membranes), and aspirin for possible headaches. You’ll thank me.

Stayed 2 nights. My overall rating: 9 out of 10 – excellent!

Traveling Route 66 for Spring Break we stayed in quite a few places- and this one had the largest rooms by far. Spacious, clean rooms with older style tile and decorations, but they added to the charm being so well kept.

We booked 2 rooms and both were the same in quality. Easy check in (the desk is kind of hidden in the back of the gift shop), but all within an easy walk.

The gift shop was a mix of new, cheap souvenirs, and authentic pieces from the area.

We would gladly stay here again, it appears that they take pride in their property.

The bridge and adjacent river are quite beautiful in the evening and make for GREAT sepia tone photographs. (Have your photo subject stand on the cables that anchor the bridge and shoot toward the top of the bridge- great composition)

We had planned on staying at Grand Canyon Village, but did not want to spend 179.00 for one night. We travelled out of the park and drove past Cameron's Trading Post and then turned around because the place looked nice. The registration desk staff were very friendly and gave us our choice of several rooms. The room was large, very clean, and had a balcony overlooking theColorado River. Loved the fact that it did not look like the typical corporate America room. We had dinner at the restaurant. The food was very good and portions very large. After a good night's sleep, we made coffee in the room and then went on the balcony to relax and watch the day begin..Breakfast in the restaurant was delicious--huervo rancheros. We then spent time in the gift shop and would highly recommend buying souveniers here as prices are much better than anywhere else we found.
