We visited Tombstone and then Bisbee, AZ last January, 2007, while visiting relatives in Arizona. We enjoyed both towns very much. If you stay overnight in Tombstone - do get up early and walk down the main street - you get an entirely different feeling - almost like you are walking down the street in the 1800's.
But, when we arrived in Bisbee, AZ early in the morning, there were a lot of homeless guys sitting around in front of the museum and, generally, around town. We ate lunch at the Bisbee Grand Hotel and I recommend it highly. Also, the mine tour was unique and fun. We then looked around town a bit.
My brother and husband waited for my sister in law and I while we looked around an antique shop. When we came out of the shop, they were standing across the street next to the library. While waiting, my husband sat our camera case (with $500 worth of digital equipment inside) on top of a newspaper dispensing box. HARD LESSON LEARNED: DON'T SIT VALUABLES DOWN ANYWHERE!!! AND WATCH, WATCH, WATCH the vagrants.
To make a long story short, my husband and brother crossed the street and no sooner had they gotten to the other side when we realized the camera bag was left on the other side of the street. I looked across the street just as a grungy homeless young guy walked by - and POOF, in just an instant - no camera!
The homelss guy ducked ithrough the door to the library and ran up the stairs - I ran across the street and dashed up the stairs after him only to find his backpack parked on a bench next to a PIT BULL.!
Tell me now, WHO ALLOWS PIT BULLS IN THE HALLWAY OF A LIBRARY IN A TOURIST TOWN? Bisbee, AZ does. I was not about to deal with a Pit Bull - he could have been friendly or he could have taken my arm off. I ran up two more flights of stairs, but the guy was nowhere to be seen. Plus, he was much bigger than me.
I was so angry to think that a beautiful town like Bisbee would allow this kind of element to frequent tourist areas without any kind of police presence. There was nothing we could do. The worst part was the loss of family photos of our brand new niece and all of our vacations photos of our trip. . We were leaving the next day - so had no time for another trip to Flagstaff for more family photos.
Bottom line - be careful, no matter how NICE the area is. Don't let your guard down in Bisbee, Arizona
Sorry, I would share my Bisbee photos, but the homeless creep got them all!!
