“Wonderful Ambiance”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2012

We stayed in the Copper Queen's Theodore Roosevelt Room and thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this grand, historical old hotel. The hotel staff was extremely friendly, and the food and service at Angela's Restaurant was great. I stay at historical hotels whenever I get the chance, and the Copper Queen has the perfect balance between authenticity and modern conveniences. If you are looking for Las Vegas-type high rollers suite, this is not the hotel for you. In fact, Bisbee is not the town for you, either. But if you are a history buff, Bisbee and the Copper Queen are where you should be.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the haunted rooms or at least a room on the more notoriously haunted floors (3rd and...

Becky,

I have to say this is one of my favorite rooms! You are indeed correct we are not a "vegas" hotel and will never be one. We are the Copper Queen Hotel, a 110 year old property and we enjoy our history.

This was my first trip to Bisbee and was delighted to stay at the Copper Queen Hotel.I very much enjoyed going back in time and stay in a "unique" hotel. The staff was very helpful. The only disappointment I had was not seeing any ghosts.I would stay there again and recommend to anyone that likes the charm of days gone by.

Roseann,

You have it right! We are a "unique" hotel. Our staff is also one of a kind and without them we would not be able to do what we do!

The staff was very friendly and acommdating. The rooms were as expected: very out-dated and not shiny and new looking. Although this does add to the appeal, the decor could still be updated and look authentic. We changed rooms after the first night and after staying in our second room for a couple of hours, our A/C window unit broke. We were allowed to change rooms because the A/C couldn't be fixed. The alternate room they put us in was small and not appealing so we asked for another. They acommodated and we were satisfied with our final room. Biggest area of opportunity would be the A/C units. When working, they are VERY loud and VERY cold in concentrated areas. The bathrooms of all the rooms we were in were very hot with little or no ventilation. If you want an authentic atmosphere, this might just work for you. I, however, just want A/C!

Room Tip: Check your A/C unit before you get comfortable. Some are louder than others, some are colder than o...

As we are not a new hotel (110 years old) there are some aspects of our property that we cannot change. If we change too much it takes away from the vision of the builders in 1898 - 1902. We are aware that some of the A/C units need work and we are in the process of correcting this.

Thank you for your comments and helping us keep this old gem operating.

The Copper Queen is grandly situated in Bisbee, AZ and you must stay there! It is a treasure that is quite authentic, and many famous people stayed there: Teddy Roosevelt and John Wayne, to name a few. The lobby is a step back in time and so are the rooms, but the amenities are super modern--i.e., no shared bathrooms! Please support this most lovely of hotels.

I would have had a better experience sleeping in my car. The bed was tiny, old, indented in the middle of the bed, the carpet in the hallways is poorly laid and ripples in several places, the bathroom was hideous, you touch the shower curtain hanging in a claw foot tub. The lavatory handle broke off when I turned tried to turn the cold water on. There is a lot of sound bleeding in from the hallway traffic. The air conditioner (window unit) did it best to keep me awake by loudly turning on and rattling obnoxiously every 15 min. No iron in the room, picked one up from the front desk and its was broke, yay! for one of the worst experiences you can have. Went to bed at 9 pm did not sleep till 12 am and woke at 5 am. I should have slept in my car and saved the $109.

Room Tip: Stay at the Ledson Loft, or San Ramon.

Love the Copper Queen, always have. Great place to relax. We brought lots of extended family on this trip and had lots of fun. The ghost experiences will give us enough to talk about for the next year! I highly recommend room 308, very nice and well put together. It had a large closet, a leather and wood rocking chair, lots of nice furniture. If you want a haunted room, though, be sure and request room 401, it's as haunted as they come. The staff is attentive and excellent. They are friendly, I feel like they are family. We enjoyed the bar very much, as well as hanging out by the pool and lobbies. You are in for a great time if you choose this hotel!

Room Tip: Ask for a large room, because the sizes do vary. We think room 308 is one of the best hotel rooms we...

Visiting Bisbee and staying at the Copper Queen had been on my wish list for a number of years. And, I was not dissappointed! I stayed on the 4th floor - actually did a Thursday Night Ghost Hunt. We got to look in many of the other rooms on the 4th floor, and they are all beautiful! Historical and yet up to date. The bed was comfortable and AC worked extremely well, I was glad for the extra blanket they supplied. The bath supplies were very nice.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Copper Queen Hotel, built in 1898 and completed in 1902, was the product of a booming mining camp called Bisbee. Once the largest city between St. Louis and San Francisco, Bisbee is now a beautiful and quiet getaway. While the town of Bisbee has "grown" it has not lost its' charm. Soon after Bisbee became a town, Phelps Dodge Mining Company built the Copper Queen Hotel as a place for dignitaries and investors to relax in luxury. Construction was difficult because Phelps Dodge had to blast away and clear a large portion of the mountainside in order for building to begin. Although the most modern and up to date materials were used, it did not lessen the difficulty of each task. In order for concrete to be mixed, water had to be pumped up the hill from the mercantile, what is now called Copper Queen Plaza, on Main Street. The walls were constructed to be nearly 2 feet thick, which helps keep the hotel cool during the summer months. Once the Hotel was completed, anyone who walked through the doors would notice the mosaic tile from Italy. Since the Hotel was built in an Italian style, the tile was installed throughout the entire first floor lobby. The remaining tile can be seen in the Hotel entrance. As the story goes, the cathedral ceiling in the Palm Room was all fitted with Tiffany glass. Nobody knows when it came down or what happened to it. There was an open air hallway behind two large windows along the southeast wall that acted as air conditioning for that era. The front desk was fabricated out of Tiger Oak and was surrounded with a wrought iron security cage. The unique safe behind the desk was once used at the Copper Mine until it became too small for the company payroll, which was all paid in cash. It was then passed down to the Copper Queen Hotel. Phelps Dodge cleverly paid their employees in cash, to have their money quickly returned to them in goods and drinks. The Copper Queen Hotel was one of the most modern hotels in the West during that time. One can only imagine what changes the Hotel has gone through to accommodate the modern day traveler. Located roughly 100 miles southeast of Tucson and at an elevation of 5,300 feet, the Hotel is usually 10 to 20 degrees cooler than in Tucson or Phoenix. In the winter, we are even blessed with an occasional snowfall. Bisbee is the southern most mile high city in the U.S. And is eight miles from the border of Mexico. Although the Copper Queen Hotel has maintained the ambiance of the Victorian Era Old West, it has been renovated with modern day conveniences to make your stay more comfortable. ... more   less
