I travel year round all over the US, and am a certified food geek.
The Grape Tap is a favorite of mine- and living in the valley, I appreciate the location of this fabulous restaurant even more. The food and atmosphere in this little wine bar are unmatched in Wasilla or Palmer, and set the bar high even for a few high end nosh spots in anchorage as well.
The Grape Tap was designed to be a "Tapas" bar- the idea is to order a bottle or 2 of wine, and a table full of appetizers to share with your friends. To meet demand, they have also added full dinner entrees to the menu.
My husband ordered the Peppercorn Tenderloin, medium rare, and I chose the chèvre stuffed dates wrapped in bacon and a plate of melted Brie. We finished with apple pie and creme brûlée.
The tenderloin was just that- tender! It could be cut with the blunt side of the knife. And it was the most consistently cooked steak we'd ever seen- warm pink center throughout, no inconsistencies. The bacon wrapped dates were AMAZING. The bacon was crispy, not overlooked, and not greasy. The Brie was buttery and creamy, served with a warm baguette and slices of green apples. Dessert really was the icing on the cake, the apples were still slightly firm and tart, the crust nice and flaky- creme brûlée was a little warm and smooth.
And my wine? I chose a mystery wine, and made sure to write down what it was to pick it up for my home collection ASAP.
Bottom line? Worth the visit. Make a reservation. It's high end, and it's worth the extra $$$ spent if you "get" really good food. And we left so full we had to go for a walk after. If you want a burger and fries at value prices, then no this is not the place for you. If you want a food experience? Call and make a reservation early. <3
