“A Pleasant Motel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2010

The Westmark Tok is a comparatively large hotel-/motel complex.
We preferred the motel part. The reception was very friendly, and we get a large
room, very clean and comfortable, king bed. On the swing just in front of our door
we dreamed from the last part of our trip, the Top of the World- and the Taylor
Highway. We spend only one night, but it was a good place.

expensive cheap motel (72). but it is clean. just don't get first floor because walls and floor r made of paper and you will hear everything from foot steps to toilet flushing. In fact this us the reason why i am up writing this. Lastly i was surprised there was a second queen bed.

For an out in-the-sticks hotel this was pretty good, real family atmosphere. The decore was a little dated but one of the highlights of my trip was one staff member in the restaurant. They have this young guy Daniel working there (with his mother) who has a habit of tieing up guests who are "unrully" - a great laugh

Since we were traveling with a large tour and in Tok for one night, we did not have a choice of hotel. However, we were pleasantly surprised at the degree of service at this hotel. Although the rooms were small, they were very clean and even had the small coffee maker provided - our bed was very comfortable, we slept well. The dining area was spacious, and the wait staff friendly and accomodating. The food was very good. We ordered from the menu, which offered a good variety, and reasonable prices. Those in our party of 6 enjoyed our meal very much. A person in our tour group had a birthday that day, and the staff came out with complimentary cake, candle, decorations, a certificate of celebration, and free TOK Westmark tee-shirts for her and her spouse. We like the DUM-DUM tree next to the door - help yourself to a DUM-DUM, we did! Don't know what a DUM-DUM is? Look it up! We thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay in TOK, AK

While the Westmark was comfortable and offered the traditional all-in-one Holland America package that ensures that those on the bus tour don't venture outside the complex, this hotel did not meet our expectations after staying in excellent non-Westmark accomodations elsewhere in Alaska and the Yukon. We were especially surprised to find housecleaning banging on our door at 8 AM.

Excuses that Tok is remote and therefore one should expect lack of amenities are misguided: Anchorage is only four hours away while Fairbanks is only three. This is not really an isolated outpost.

We stayed overnight here on the way to Dawson City from Anchorage. We arrived late at night, but there was still someone at the desk to greet us and check us in to our rooms. We were able to park very close to our room, and were surprised to see they had already put a crib in the room for our baby without us asking (we simply told them we had a baby when we made the reservation). That attention to detail really impressed us!

We had a king size bed in our room and, contrary to other posts, it was VERY comfortable. So much so, in fact, that both my wife and I commented at the time at how much better the beds were. We even mentioned it to the front desk and we found out they are the same beds used on the Holland America cruise ships!

We also really enjoyed the large shared patio between the rooms and the nice patio furniture. We enjoyed several hours in the morning sipping our coffee and enjoying the sunshine on it.

We also ate dinner at the hotel restaurant and it was excellent. We started off with an Alaskan sized margarita that my wife and I shared (36 oz!). The menu had many choices, but we were told that mexican was their specialty, so I tried that and it was very good! My wife tried some pasta and also really enjoyed her meal. The service was excellent as well. We could tell that the restaurant was frequented by locals too, which is always a good sign.

All in all, we liked the place so much that we made sure we stayed there again on our way back to Anchorage from Dawson City. I hope you enjoy your stay here as much as we did!

WOW! I couldn't get over how horrible this place was! I was so thrilled that we could stay in a Westmark hotel in Tok, of all places. The website does a great job of making you think this is a much nicer hotel that it is. It looks to be a family-run motel that has been purchased by the Westmark brand, with no real changes having been made to the motel.

Everything at this hotel is very basic, but there is no real lack of anything. I thought I had laid down on a cement slab, and that's no joke. If you need Internet access though, it is only available in the lobby. We arrived at 10 PM, and the restaurant was closed, so we headed down the street to Fast Eddy's, which was surprisingly great! We did eat breakfast in the hotel restaurant, which was way overpriced and hit or miss good, with the majority of it being miss. There is a buffet for around $15 or you can order from the menu. The menu a la carte prices are so bad you may as well just get the buffet. And while the pancakes from the menu looked really good (my colleague said they were great) my cinnamon roll came out burnt without icing! I couldn't stomach breakfast and left it all. Had I known Fast Eddy's was open for breakfast I would have gone there.

While we were there, they has "Christmas in July". The lobby and restaurant was decorated for Christmas (along with Valentine's Day hearts, 4th of July decorations and Alaska themed stuff), and there were carols on the speakers. The employees were dressed as elves and such. When we inquired about it, we found out there was no real purpose to it, no events for the guests or anything. It just added cheese factor to an already cheesy motel.

As a side note, there is a small coffee shop in the lobby that offered reasonably good coffee. Save yourself the money in the restaurant for bad coffee and get some in the lobby.

Make no mistake, this is not a Westmark hotel in spirit. They have put their name on it, but it is much more like an independent roadside motel. This motel is a 1960's route 66 throwback. We'll stay somewhere else next time.
