We got back from Marina Lodge about 3 weeks ago. We found a great deal and stayed for 2 weeks. The staff are very friendly, even the quiet ones. Once you start talking to them. We got to know a few of the staff quite well. Our deal was half board. We did not think we needed all inclusive as we are not big drinkers, but it is recommended if you plan to drink a lot. We didn't need the lunch to be included in our holiday as we figured we would be out for most of the day and return back to the hotel for dinner. We snacked during the day, there are opportunites to buy hot food at the hotel at reasonable prices, as well as a snack food joint at the sister hotel close to the pool.
The food at the marina lodge is very nice, there is alot of variety and seems suitable for many people with different diets. We had no problem with the food at all. There is a station for fresh ommelettes and pancakes for breakfast every day, made to order, as well as the buffet food (we would like to say hello to Mohammed and Ab Nabi who was at the station every morning making special ommelettes! We will be sending through our pictures to you soon!) The station also has different food on offer each day at dinner time, and there is a different food theme each night. Staff are always available to help or explain the contents of any of the dishes. The waitering staff are brilliant. They are quick and efficient and will carry out tasks without you even noticing. Very pleasant and friendly, and fun to joke around with! (hello to Attef and Abdul!)
Room service was also very good, amazing origami made out of the towels each day! A nice surprise for when we returned at the end of the day. The room was clean and comfortable. There is a free water taxi which takes you to the beach and where the sister hotel is also located (there is nothing else on the side where the Marina Lodge is) the water taxi ride is only a few minutes and run for most of the day into the evening so this was not an issue. It was a nice part of the day (or you can opt to take a bus ride which is also free). Marina Lodge residents can use the facilties of the sister hotels heated pool. The pool at the marina lodge is freezing cold, and you don't see many people swimming in it!
If you walk along to the end of the pier at the beach and take time to speak to the lifeguards, they can let you know when the best times are to see marine life. We were told that dolphins swim near the pier each day at 7am! I could not swim, and they were very helpful in providing me with equipment and giving me the confidence to go snorkelling, which I did!
The prices at the shops in the marina lodge hotel are extortionate. We did not buy anything from there, not even essentials. We were told that their rent is very high, but we were taking our money to spend at another small shop on the beach side. We went there each day anyway, and their prices were more reasonable. There is honestly nothing bad we can say about our stay at the Marina Lodge. We wanted a relaxing holiday and that is what we got. It was sunny almost every day, although some days the breeze was quite strong. It is one of the best holidays that we have had. We had one unfortunate encounter though, we were informed on the day we arrived that there was a cheap supermarket 15 minutes away from the hotel. The hotel bus could take us there, and this was organised through reception. However, the busman said that he would buy the goods for us as the shopkeepers would make it cheaper for him, that the shop charges extortionate prices to tourists. We trusted him as he was from the hotel, and bought bottles of water and a few snacks for our room. He asked for £28 (British). We thought this was expensive for what we had bought, but he said that what we bought would have originally cost us £100! We knew we had been ripped off, but just let it go. One day, another couple we had met told us how to get to the shop (they have been this resort a few times). It is safe, but there are no proper roads! It's all open space and you will most likely see no one! but when we arrived, the prices were surely dirt cheap!
The Marina Lodge have events in Bar 50 area every night. Make sure you check the daily events and activites for each day so that you don't miss out on something that you want to do. To name a few, Karaoke, Film nights, Cookery Class, Belly Dancing). The staff that organise the entertainment nights are very enthusiastic and are always willing to take part in the fun! (hello Ahmed!)
Another tip. We went with Thomas Cook, and one of the activities we wanted to do were most expensive organised through them. Check prices of excursions and other activities in the foyer area, where all the travel agents have their own poster ads. They have their own prices, and so does the hotel, or try going directly to the office where they organise the event and haggle with them! That is what we did with the Seascope Submarine. The prices for these were so high for what it was. We managed to get a discount after the second time we went to haggle at their office. A word of warning though, the Seascope Submarine left nearly all the passengers feeling seasick. There were people of all ages on this boat, but the motion sickness was very bad, and everyone left the boat clutching plastic bags! You are better off snorkelling to see the corals and fishes. If you are not confident, the Dive Centre at the Marina Lodge will advise you.
We would definately recommend Marina Lodge as a place to stay for a relaxing holiday. We loved it! Kos and Kelly! x
