“Nice hotel, great snorkeling/diving place!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2012

Just spent a week there. Nice, clean, comfortable rooms. Nice looking grounds. Beautiful reef - great snorkeling, and diving. Food was so-so, some was good, some was just ok, liked their Arabic nights. It was pretty quiet, entertaining staff was hardly noticeable and worked primerely for Italian guests. Would go back, but will not give them a 5 or 4 star.

I spent a nice week-long holiday there with my mum. We have paid extra for sea view and got the room in the first line, next to the beach. We could walk there directly from the room terrace.
The rooms in Brayka Bay (there is now a new part of the holtel opened, named Brayka Royal) need restoration, but they are clean, the guy comes every day, exchanges the towels and cleans quite properly. The air conditioning was efficient. The area is well maintained, a lot of trees and blooming bougenvillas.
The hotel is located at sandy narrow bay, the wind is no obstacle for swimming, snorkeling or divind. They have their own diving centre - Extra Divers (of German origin) in the hotel with the training pool, zodiak and all kinds of equipment. There is a reef on both sides of the bay, lots of "ordinary" fishes (like crocodile fish, wrasses, blue spotted sting rays or lionfishes), at the tome we were on holiday a young sea turtle was coming every day in the afternoon, sometimes the dolphins or rays come. The beach is not very lanrge but usually there is no problem with finding free sunbeds under the beach umbrellas. There is a pool but we have not used it. There is a drink bar on the beach and at the pool (the latter also opened in the evening, so you can seat outside - there is always music live in the evenings or take a drink and go to bedoun tent next to it - sheesha available at extra pay, appx 20 EGP).
The food was OK, good choice, we had not experienced any stomach problems. The same with beverages and drinks.
We used the SPa and were satisfied - we decided for a package of massages and it was very relaxing. The price was reasonable, could be negotiated and I paid at the reception with the credit card (no problems with accepting that kind of payment).
Generally a very nice and relaxing holiday and we will definitely come back.

Room Tip: If you go to the right from the hotel along the beach there is another small bay at 15 min walk, nam...

My sister and I stayed at Brayka Bay and it's put me off ever wanting to go back to Marsa Alam! First of all the place was very clean but that's where it ends. The spa was a complete rip off and after working out the prices, it was the same price to have a spa treatment back home in the UK. The food was terrible! Not only was it tasteless, but it made us very ill! After speaking to other people from the UK that were staying there, it was clear that they had all gotten ill too! And because the resort is in the middle of no where and there are no surrounding towns or shops, you either ate the food and got terribly ill or starved! Both my sister and I starved with the exception of tea- my sister actually almost passed out at one point. And when we all went to the holiday rep to complain- she assured us the food was not washed with tap water which was a complete lie- highly unlikely everyone from one country would get ill! The animation team were extremely annoying and kept bothering you when you tried to relax. And we also got hasselled by the worker men in the pool area- always trying to talk to us and flirt which made us very uncomfortable! I would NOT recommend this place at all- you're paying all-inclusive prices but can't even eat the food! Waste of money all I'm thankful for is the lovely tan we got and the weight we had no choice but to lose!

Brayka Bay now consists of 2 joined resorts that share the same bay. We went there end of March 2012 and it wasn't crowded but I'm sure it would be difficult to get a lounge chair on the beach when both resorts are complete.
What we liked: we were upgraded to a superior room right off the beach and the room was very spacious and impeccable. It had a terrasse with a small table with a beautiful view of the bay. The bathroom was big and working perfectly. If you shower after 22h00 the water is lukeware so if you want a hot shower get one before.
The room has all the usual facilities: TV, AC, minibar fridge and a HUGE bed. Everything was super clean and towels were change 3 times in one week.

What we really liked:
- protected bay for snorkelling where you can snorkel even when it's very windy (you can't do that in the other resorts where the reef is out a sea). Both the north and south reef are very nice and there is plenty to see.
- all rooms are facing the sea, even those that are far from the beach (we saw other resorts where the rooms where facing the highway...)
- the gardens where well kept and had a lot of flowers. It didn't feel like being in the desert
- the fitness center. The resort also has a SPA but we didn't try it

What the resort can improve:
- food was average and what looked like a bit variety of dishes all tasted the same. We would have appreciated some more grilled fish
- only one restaurant which gets very crowded at rush hour (18h30) but if you go later (20h30) then you have to rush to eat because they kick you out at 21h (and the waiters show clear signs of impatience)
- except for the boy that cleaned our room the rest of the staff was not overly friendly. We had asked to be woken up at 04h00 because we had booked an excursion to Luxor but the front desk forgot to wake us up :( Fortunately our personal alarm clocked had worked!

Other comments:
- one side of the resort is very calm at night and the other side where the italian animators are can get very noisy. It depends what you want.
- although the beach is perfect for families since you can access the water directly from the beach and not from a pontoon, the resort is lacking children's facilities. There is only a small playground
- you can use the facilities of both resorts which means in total there are 3 swimming pools

Extra Divers Center: very very expensive and quite unfriendly staff. Very disappointing. Also most of the excursions were always canceled at the last moment, the official excuse being the wind conditions...
If you go there for diving be informed of the following:
- if you have less than 25 logged dives you need to hire a guide (5 eur per person)
- the first dive has to be monitored by a guide (even if you have more than 25 dives) and it takes place in the resort's bay. Not very exciting. So you end up paying 40 eur for a TEST DIVE that you could basically do in their swimming pool (the test consists of mask clearance, alternative breathing with regulator, buoyancy). A rip off.
- if you want to go to Elphinstone to see the oceanic white tip shark you need 50 logged dives (that's an Egyptian rule). The reason being that the currents there are very strong and you need to go down quick;y. However, the excursion was always canceled when we were there
- costs: we did 2 dives and paid 45 euros per dive (I had my own regulator and dive computer fins, masks, 5 mm and wetsuit and only needed to rent the hood because the water was at 23 degrees). One dive was in the bay and the other dive was 5 min ride by zodiac. Very expensive compared to Indonesia or Maldives where for the same price the total equipment is included.

If you go to Brayka bay be aware that this is the only dive center and that you are stuck with them.

One last tip: if you book a package it is better to land in Marsa Alam (30 minute drive from the airport) than in Hurghada (3 hours drive from the airport)

Great food! The beach was exceptional. I strongly recommend quad drives, great experience. The place was very clean. Definitely the best place in Marsa Alam.

Really nice spacious hotel. Beautifull gardens, lovely smelling flowers, nice birds. Spacious and clean room with balcony and view on the bay. Our matresses were a bit hard though. Staffmemebers were exceptionally friendly. The best thing of this hotel was that the housereef is in a bay, so you don't have to worry about currents and rough sea (like at other hotels). We could snorkel everyday. You can see as much snorkeling as you can see diving. Large variety of fish and coral. Apart from the usuall spieces we saw turtles, Napoleon wrasse, crocodilefish, scorpionfish, nudibranch, bluespotted stingray, octopus, etc. We are passionate about snorkeling and we selected this hotel because of their housereef. We were not dissapointed. Nice reef. Have a look at my pictures.

About the food: Breakfast is good, with lots of things to choose from (different breads, cereals, warm dishes, fresh fruits, different yoghurts, egg station, etc). Lunch is ok; lots of different bread, salads, a soup, a selection of warm foods, lots of deserts. At dinertime there is always a dish from the BBQ.

About excusrsions: A trip to Luxor from this hotel is absolutely recommendable. Absolutely amazing temples to see! A must-do.
We also went on the ''snorkel with dolphins in the wild''-trip. But we did not see any dolphins. Before we went they said there was a ''high chance'' to see/swim with the dolphins. But afterwards a staff member said the chance was only 10%. We were told in summer you should have better chances to swim with the dolphins. Let the buyer beware and ask before you book how big the chance is you get to actually swim with the dolphins.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2012

Stayed here in the first week of April, and having done our research it was exactly as expected.

It's a pretty standard Egyptian all-inclusive resort, other than the fact that the eating options were fewer than I've encountered elsewhere. The included meals are all taken in the main buffet restaurant, and there were two other restaurants on site where you have an allowance to put towards your meal. The Hemingway restaurant in particular appeared to be hardly used at all (they opened it specially for my birthday, and just two of us were there!). The main restaurant was fine - plenty of choice at all meals - but nothing special. We were in and out pretty quickly at each meal. The wine comes out of a dispenser and is vile.

We paid extra to stay in one of the seafront blocks (The Bay Inn), which we thought was worth it so that we were close to the sea and could get in early to snorkel. There were plenty of people in the sea even at 6am.

The staff from the "wellness centre" do come and tout for business on the beach which is mildly irritating. We booked a massage, which then turned into two massages, but actually you can negotiate quite a good deal (and the massages were nice!). Didn't use the gym, but it looked spacious and well-equipped.

The dive centre is run by Extra Divers who offer a very good range of snorkelling and dive trips.

There is nothing else close to the hotel, other than the new Royal Brayka hotel that's not quite fully open yet. When it is, the beach and bay are going to be pretty crowded, and I fear for the reef. The animation at the Royal Brayka was absurdly loud - you could hear the beach aerobics and other entertainment across the bay and it was very, very irritating.

The grounds and gardens are beautiful (providing employment for many!), and there was plenty of bird life around when we were there.

The guests are very international. Other than an English couple there were no other British people staying at the hotel when we were there, which some people might not be comfortable with (though actually I liked it that way). That said, the language of the resort is English.

The staff and service were very good. There are a few shops on site - but with two packets of crisps costing 5 euros we didn't spend anything there. I put the crisps back on the shelf and went without!

In summary, the hotel offered nothing special or outstanding, but was exactly as we'd expected and needed after a week's cruise on the Nile. If I just wanted a week's snorkelling and not a lot else I would probably go back now, but I fear that the very reason I would choose to go back - the reef - will be trashed before too long.

I can't think of anything else, but happy to help if you want to PM me.

Room Tip: Worth paying extra for one of the smaller, waterfront blocks
