Spent a week at the Calimera after a week's Nile cruise. If you are doing this please note that this involves a six and a half hour journey in a mini-bus and the driving is hair-raising to say the least!
However,we arrived safely and were given a free upgrade to a superior room which was enormous with spectacular views of the sea and the desert.Unfortunately, we were not shown to our room, although one of the staff told us to "Turn left and go direct".After a while of wandering about in the dark,we came across a security guard who showed us the way. This helpfulness continued throughout the week. The staff are really great.
On arrival we discovered we could not open the safe.We reported this to Simon the rep (who is also great) the next morning but it took two days for someone to come to open it.This was a minor problem and we didn't really mind.
We did mind the lack of sun loungers. Perhaps the hotel was unusually busy but in seven days we got sun loungers by the pool once and that was thanks to the (again) very helpful attendant. Our friends, also unable to get loungers, chose to sit at a table by the pool. They saw that some loungers, reserved by towels from early in the morning, were not occupied until late afternoon.I know that this is common practice in most hotels but this is the only one I have been to where we were completely unable to get loungers for most of our stay.
As a result of this,we went to the beach where there were loungers available. The beach at the Calimera is not great, comprising mostly of dead coral which you cannot walk on without shoes so we went to the beach of the sister hotel which was really nice.
While we were there I tried snorkelling for the first time and it was amazing! The fish swim right up into the shallows and the water is unbelievably warm.Further out, you can find more colourful fish.We took the free shuttle bus to the nearby beach (forget how to spell it!) where it is like snorkelling in an aquarium.I do not like going out of my depth and it was still wonderful.
As I said, perhaps the hotel was very busy that week, but the restaurant was quite an experience. The food itself was great and I enjoy a buffet service but in other hotels I have been to a buffet service involves helping youself to food while a waiter brings your drinks. Here it is completely self-service.On our first night we could not find a table that had been cleared so we sat at an uncleared one and waited for cutlery to arrive. After a while,we gave up and my husband went in search of some.Having got the cutlery,we started queuing for food. For some strange reason, instead of one long queue going round the stations, which is what normally happens in my experience, there were separate queues for different types of food so we stood in various queues and eventually returned to our seats. However,we still didn't have drinks so my husband joined another queue to get some.Having finished our meal,I went to get coffee. There were no cups left so I waited in (another) queue for some to arrive.Five minutes later, the cups arrived and I joined (yet another queue) to help myself from the one jar of coffee.
To be fair, on the other two nights that we tried the restaurant, things were a bit better but it still felt like a huge cafeteria. The staff work hard but everything seemed very disorganised.
The food at breakfast was good but in the whole week we never found a cleared table to sit at and became quite expert at finding our own cutlery!
As a result of the chaos in the restaurant,we ate mainly in the a la carte restaurants which were excellent and very cheap ,although friends who stayed in Hurghada didn't have to pay for the a la carte restaurants.
Reading this over,I realise I have made the holiday sound awful - it wasn't. In every other respect it was great.Once we discovered the adjacent beach and the a la carte restaurants we had a fantastic time.
I would buy the tablets Simon recommends for upset stomachs. They really worked for us.(This,by the way is not a slur on the hotel's food. Most people we met both on the cruise and at the hotel had problems for a day or so.)
Finally, don't touch the outside walls of the rooms painted red.It comes off on your hands!!
