This is the 4th time we have been to the hotel and although we were not dissapointed I feel there are a couple of points worth a mention; The good points are that the staff are the people who make the hotel worth re-visiting, you are always made welcome and are made to feel like part of a large family. Nothing is too much trouble for them and they even go out of their way to help if you are not feeling well or having an off day. We were there for our anniversary and were left a card from the management and the Thomson Rep, the Chef Mohammed made us a special meal and the bar staff were very attentive. Throughout the stay there is never a hint of anyone looking for tips. ARRIVAL. Marsa Alam has its own private airport which is new, well run and efficient on the whole. It is minutes from the resorts and a pleasure to go through compared with Gatwick and Sharm. At the hotel you are greeted with a drink in a cool reception and are free to eat, drink or go to the room where your luggage will be carried by the bell boys.
THE HOTEL. THE ROOMS are well appointed with ample space for clothes etc, good wet room bathrooms and comfortable beds. (the headboards have just been changed to a leather type) the rest of the room is wood and wicker which is good but some of the wicker needs to be changed or updated as it is starting to show its use. THE POOL areas are great with ample beds and space. There are 4 pools; one is a medium size shallow on the lower terrace and is the quiet area, the main pool is split by a walkway with one side for leisure and water sports and the other side for general use, in May it was a lovely temperature. The last pool is a small kiddies pool with overhead cover from the sun and a small slide. All pool areas have a fixed rectangular sunshade (6 beds each) My only comment about the pool area is that the beds are the aluminium type that are narrow, have no mattress and are quite uncomfortable after a while especially if you have a bit of weight about you. The other point is that I have noticed many of the tiles around the area are starting to rise and chip and although some repairs are being made it really needs a bit more of an overhaul. (It would not affect your holiday though, not a mess just tired) THE BEACH is just fine if you like beaches. There are ample spaces all with sun shades and the same beds as the pool area. The sand is a mix of coral sand or imported sand. There is a fixed JETTY that splits into 2 platforms with sun shades; one for divers and the other for observation or snorkelling with a stair and submerged platform to step off. You can go into the sea from this point or the beach and the sea is shallow from the beach for a long way out. The whole sea area is within a medium sized bay. The coral and sea life are of a moderate viewing, nothing spectacular but more than enough if it is your first time in the Red Sea. THE RESTAURANTS are fine with typical fayre found in Egypt. There is the main restaurant open for all meals (sometimes themed) and there is always something for everyone. the restaurant is inside but has a large outside covered area if that is your thing but smoking is allowed outside. The inside restaurant is fine but can get very warm as the aircon is either insufficient or not on. If you cannot find something to eat the chefs will happily make you something just for you. There is also the beach snack bar which doubles as a themed restaurant in the evening. As a snack bar it is great with all the normal fayre; hot dogs, burgers, pizza and chips etc. There is no dress code in the snack bar during the day as it is used by all the beach dwellers for drinks and toilets. One side of the snack bar is smoking which can drift and also it is not pleasant to be eating when some people walk in in swimwear and stand right in front of you or sit next to you (especially some in trunks) THE BARS. There is the main bar in the hotel which has a large seating area both in and out (outside is smoking) and the pool bar (not swim up) All the restaurants and bars serve beer, wine and soft drinks. THE AQUA PARK there is an aqua park that is for use by all the hotels and it is free. It is a fantastic facility with great slides and it is always under-used. 2 minutes from the hotel and is used more by adults than children. NOT SO GOOD POINTS. After several visits to this hotel we have found that there appears to be a bit of money saving going on. The waiter service by the bars has gone and the number of staff in the restaurants seems to have depleted by quite a number. In all the staff at the hotel is a lot less than it used to be, combined with the repair and general outlook appears to show that someone is trying to save money in the running of the hotel. We had a letter from thomson also stating that it has been reduced from 5 star to 4.
In their wisdom Thomson not only changed the hotel to 4 star, they also changed the aircraft and flight times, the checkout at the hotel is 12 noon but the pick up to the airport is at 1845hrs so there is lots of waiting around unless you pay extra to retain a room. The night flight arriving back at Gatwick at 0215 is not great if you have a long drive after.
THE REALLY GOOD BIT. The Thomson Rep Achmed is a top rep who is so dedicated he even comes in on his day off to check on his guests. He is polite, well informed and exceptionally helpful, a credit to his country and company. Staff of note are all at the pool bar, Hassan, Nasser, Ibrahim, Mohammed Ali and Waleed. Nothing is soo much trouble and they are a great fun bunch of guys as well. We cannot name them all but the staff are what make the place great, we would definately return again but hope that the owners and manager spend a bit of money on freshening the place up.
As a family hotel there can be a number of children there is less noise from footsteps and dragging...
