Stayed at the Iberotel Lamaya Resort for a week, only returning last night (12th December) much to my frustration knowing I had to get back to the 9 to 5 called work!!
Booked this holiday with a couple of friends earlier in the year following our trip to Egypt (Taba) last year as it was a perfect complement prior to Christmas - Relaxation, Sun, Food, Booze and Friends!!
Arrived at Lamaya Resort following a cramped flight with Thomas Cook (must be one of the worst planes for leg room) - at least the transfer from Airport to Resort is only about a 15 minute journey by coach.
We were greeted at the Resort with a welcome drink and at handed our packs containing various information about the Resort and our keys.
Room booked was a Family Room, which basically consisted of 4 single beds with doors separating 2 beds either side. All rooms seemed to have a balcony which overlooked the pool area of either the Lamaya Resort or the Resort next door which name escapes me.
Food - I was very impressed by the choice and quality of the food that was on offer considering it was All Inclusive. For Breakfast you had an array to choose from like Omelettes, Crepes, Fruit and various other things. Lunch could either be taken in the Restaurant or the Beach Bar, with the Restaurant serving an expanse of options and the Beach Bar making quick ‘n’ easy meals like Burgers or Pizza. Tried both Restaurants during the week and enjoy the food immensely. Evening meal was in the Restaurant and tended to have a different theme each night – Egyptian, Italian, Sea Food, Greek? What ever the theme was we always found something to eat – if all else failed you could always sneak into the Kids Corner and help yourself to the Chicken Nuggets and Chips as most adults did every night. Overall, an excellent array of good quality food throughout the day on offer, and I didn’t hear of many upset stomachs throughout the week so that’s a plus.
Drinks – Good quality and plentiful is how best to describe the availability of Drinks throughout the Resort. On offer were the locally produced Wine and Beer and good measures of what ever spirits you required. Cocktails were also available, but beware they are strong and can get repetitive and sickly if you over indulge like I did on Mia Tai’s. As the Resort was quite empty there was limit enforced on how many drinks you could order – hence stock up on drinks before midnight if you are planning a late night drinking. Not mentioning names, our final night saw 40 glasses of Beer being ordered before midnight and then being consumed into the early hours – my head was sore the next day (Special thanks to Hany and Emad the Barmen)!!
Pool/Sea – From what I remember, there were 4 pools, which 2 were shallow pools for use by the kids and the other pools were swimming pools. Although beware, one pool is pre-heated and the other is freezing. I’ll let you work out which is which!! The Sea is a few steps away from the Resort and was adequate. The sand was a bit hard on the feet, but it provided a peaceful retreat from the pool area during the week. It was also where the jetty was to get into the sea and do a bit of snorkelling. I went snorkelling a number of times during the week and enjoyed seeing the different coral and fishes.
Entertainment – Rubbish, did not seem interested in getting the support of the guests and if they were organising something they announced it in either Russian or German – occasionally reminding us in English. The only entertainment tended to be the annoyingly addictive song 'Baadingoo' being played in the morning. We went to the Amphitheatre a few times and only found the Fakir Show of any interest.
Overall, I personally had a really relaxing holiday with great company and came back with a nice tan much to the envy of my work colleagues. The Resort is still in its infancy and in years to come this area could well compete with Sharm el Sheikh in terms of facilities.
I will give a word of warning though to ladies either travelling alone or in female groups. Watch out for the amorous Cleaners late at night who were know to knock on doors at 3.00am with towels and keep a keen look out for ‘The Duke’ – you’ll know who he is if you ever get the pleasure to meet him either in the Bar or Disco.
